Pop icon Britney Spears is making headlines all over the world for her recent songs, music videos and Femme Fatale tour, but not all of them are positive.
Her trademark scandalous, skimpy costumes have earned harsh criticism from some, while her devoted fans continue to flock to the singer's every show.
One thing's for sure: This is not the Britney Spears of old.
The pop icon kicked off the UK leg of her tour in London Thursday night, showing off her ample, womanly curves in sexy bras, panties, leotards, etc.
The 29-year-old chanteuse, whose weight has fluctuated in recent years, is not shy about flaunting a slightly healthier midsection and ... other attributes.
But is she phoning it in these days? The Daily Mail reported that Britney’s ticket sales have been sluggish and that her lip synced performance at the O2 arena “lacked soul” and that there was “no real interaction between the singer and her fans.”
Does Britney Spears still have it?

Game 6 is under way, and the Cardinals are in immediate trouble.
St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia issues a leadoff walk to Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus singles to left-center, sending Kinsler to third. Josh Hamilton follows with an RBI single.
With runners at the corners, Garcia buckled down. He struck out Michael Young and Adrian Beltre before Nelson Cruz grounded out. Texas leads 1-0.
That's already more than the Rangers managed against Garcia in Game 2, when he yielded only three hits in seven shutout innings while striking out seven.
___
Clear skies in St. Louis tonight, after Game 6 of the World Series was postponed a day because of rain. The temperature is 56 degrees with little wind. Not a bad night to play ball.
Much has been made about who would pitch for the Cardinals in a potential Game 7. The rainout gives manager Tony La Russa a chance to bring back ace Chris Carpenter on three days' rest if he wants. But they have to get there first, and nobody is more aware of that than La Russa. He refused to look beyond Game 6 during his pregame news conference today.
On the mound, it's a rematch of the Game 2 pitching duel between Garcia and Texas right-hander Colby Lewis. Both were outstanding last time out, and the Rangers rallied in the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory.
Garcia is at his best in Busch Stadium, while Lewis has been Texas' most reliable postseason starter the past two years. He is 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA in seven starts, and it was Lewis who threw a gem to close out the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the 2010 AL championship series.
He gets another shot at a clincher tonight.
Regardless of the Game 5 phone fiasco, the Cardinals have been let down by the deep bullpen that carried them into the Series. But they also need to get their big bats going.
Albert Pujols is 0 for 12 besides his record-setting outburst in Game 3, when he had three homers, five hits, six RBIs and 14 total bases. Lance Berkman is batting .389, but he's struck out seven times and has only two RBIs. Matt Holliday is 3 for 18 (.167) without an RBI, and leadoff man Rafael Furcal is 3 for 20 (.150).
First pitch coming up at 8:05 p.m. EDT as the Rangers try to win their first World Series crown. St. Louis hopes to force the first decisive Game 7 since 2002.

Today I return to addressing some of the concerns that people are having with obtaining coverage or dealing with their health insurance carriers. Many of the questions I have received pertain to pre-existing conditions, including the one below that was received via Twitter.
Dear Wendell
Will people with pre-existing conditions EVER get health care for their pre-existing conditions?
Dear Bubbe:
The short answer to your question is "yes," thanks to the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. ObamaCare.
Some background: One of the reasons the number of Americans without insurance has increased to more than 50 million is because it has been perfectly legal for insurance companies to refuse to sell coverage to people who have been sick in the past. This includes those who were born with birth defects or who were diagnosed with chronic illnesses when they were children. In fact, many parents have learned that they could not add a child to a family policy because the child had been treated for a condition that was on their insurer's automatic denial list.
The practice also penalizes adults who have enough money to buy just about anything they want -- except health insurance. I have met very wealthy people who have been turned down by every insurance firm they've applied to because of a pre-existing condition. Once you've been turned down by one insurer, your chances of getting coverage from another one are slim to none. That's because one of the first questions on every application for health insurance policies sold on the individual market is, "Have you ever been denied coverage?"
Every insurer has its own list of conditions that will result in a denial, but unless you live in a state that forces insurance firms to make their lists public, like California, good luck finding out in advance of applying for coverage if your pre-existing condition is on the list.
The California Department of Insurance provides a valuable public service by listing on its Web site the health conditions that likely will result in either an automatic denial or a much higher monthly premium.
The list for automatic denial is long. It includes heart disease, cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and stroke and even allergies and mild depression.
Refusing to sell coverage to people with pre-existing conditions not only helps explain the swelling ranks of the uninsured in this country but also the record profits health insurance companies have been posting in recent years. When you refuse to sell coverage to people who really need it, you don't have to spend much paying claims.
Fortunately, ObamaCare already is forcing insurers to change their business practices. Insurance firms no longer can refuse to cover children with pre-existing conditions. In 2014, the law will also apply to adults. Insurers will also not be able to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions by charging them far more than healthier people. As it is now, even if insurers that sell policies on the individual market agree to cover care for pre-existing conditions, the premiums they charge are often beyond the means of many Americans to pay them.
And even though the reform law will not prohibit insurers from refusing to sell coverage to adults with pre-existing conditions until 2014, it does provide help that wasn't in place in many states before the law was enacted. Although people in some states were able to enroll in high-risk insurance plans before the federal law was passed, these plans were not available in many states. Now, federally operated plans are available in states that did not previously offer them.
The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) makes coverage available to any U.S. citizen who has been denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition, so long as they have been uninsured for at least six months. That doesn't mean that the premiums will be cheap, but coverage is available, and many people with pre-existing conditions who have enrolled in PCIP are now insured for the first time in a long time. For more information on the plan and to determine benefits and rates in your state, visit healthcare.gov, a Web site of the Department of Health and Human Services.
It's important to note that most employers that offer coverage to their workers do not refuse to cover care for pre-existing conditions, at least after a certain amount of time. So if you're employed by a company that provides group coverage and that subsidizes the premiums for workers and their dependents, think twice before declining to enroll in a company plan. Chances are you will be able to get better benefits at a lower price through a group plan than you can get on the individual market, including in a Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.

TAMPA BAY ? For the 12th consecutive season, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Lightning Foundation have teamed up with community leader Steve Yerrid and The Yerrid Foundation to roll out the yellow carpet for Tampa Bay Fights Cancer Night. The Lightning will hold the event in conjunction with the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.
As in years past, the theme of Tampa Bay Fights Cancer Night will help raise awareness in support of finding a cure for the disease, as well as spread the message that courage, strength and love can build bridges to a better tomorrow. This centerpiece event involves a matchup between the Lightning and the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, October 29 at 7 p.m. in which more than 2,000 individuals affected by the disease or helping to find a cure in Tampa Bay will be invited to enjoy the game. The annual event brings together a multitude of charitable organizations dedicated to dealing with the dreaded disease.
"On behalf of the Lightning and the entire Tampa Bay community, I would like to thank Steve Yerrid on his work in the fight against cancer," said Lightning CEO Tod Leiweke. "Tampa Bay Fights Cancer Night is an event we are more than happy to host for the 12th consecutive season and none of it would be possible without Steve's generosity. Hopefully everyone involved in the fight against this brutal disease can find some escape in the evening and we look forward to teaming up with Steve again for years to come."
"Together with the Lightning, we have established one of the key note annual events for the cancer community in the Bay Area," Yerrid added. "Everyone involved in this event is united in the fight against a brutal disease that touches us all and does not discriminate. In hosting this event, as we do every year, we hope to provide awareness to the battle that so many in our community are involved in and give them a break, if only for a night. I would like to again thank Jeff Vinik, Tod Leiweke and the rest of the Lightning for their dedication to this event that will mean so much to these truly special people.
"I am particularly pleased to have formed friendships with Jeff and Tod, and I am 100 percent certain these men care deeply about doing good in our community. I look forward to our future work together."
To date, more than 75,000 cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, families, doctors, nurses and volunteers have participated in Tampa Bay Fights Cancer Night activities. With the goal of bringing the cause to the forefront of the community's awareness, The Yerrid Foundation and the Lightning Foundation have teamed up to provide tickets and t-shirts to all participants, as well as food vouchers to all children from the organizations.
To kick off the evening, Lightning Owner and Chairman Jeff Vinik will accompany Yerrid to center ice for a ceremonial opening puck drop and moment of silence to be held in honor of those who have lost their battle with the disease. More than 40 special guests will also be able to sit on the bench and in the penalty box for the pregame skate and enjoy meet-and-greets with Lightning players, visits to the radio and television broadcast booths and other activities on the plaza.
Three individuals will also be designated as "Yerrid's Heroes" for the night. The designations of Yerrid's Heroes each year go to local champions in the "cancer community". Those represented will be an outstanding doctor or caregiver, a family member and a current patient fighting their personal battles with the disease. These incredible individuals will be recognized in-game and wear a "Yerrid's Heroes" jersey for the night.
Fans will also see the return of the familiar yellow Yerrid Foundation t-shirts, symbolizing hope among members of the community. Those who would like to help support the event will be able to purchase the special shirts during the game outside of sections 112 and 310. Kohl's Cares, the charity arm of Kohl's Department Stores, will be providing volunteers for t-shirt distribution, as well as to help escort participants throughout the arena. The organization is also donating $500 through the Lightning Foundation.
In addition, 11 local organizations will be provided with tickets for the Lightning-Jets game including Children's Cancer Center, Children's Dream Fund, All Children's Hospital, Faces of Courage, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Moffitt Cancer Center, Pediatric Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, 1 Voice Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Tampa General Hospital.
In December of 1998, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association announced a joint initiative, Hockey Fights Cancer, to honor those in the hockey community who have struggled, or continue to struggle with cancer. Hockey's All-Star Kids Program, an extension of Hockey Fights Cancer, was introduced in October 1999 to link the hockey community with the youngest victims of cancer. As a whole, the NHL and contributing partners have raised more than $7 million in support of local cancer research organizations across the league.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? Researchers have built a map that shows how thousands of proteins in a fruit fly cell communicate with each other. This is the largest and most detailed protein interaction map of a multicellular organism, demonstrating how approximately 5,000, or one third, of the proteins cooperate to keep life going.
"My group has been working for decades, trying to unravel the precise connections among the proteins and gain insight into how the cell functions as a whole," says Spyros Artavanis-Tsakonas, Harvard Medical School professor of cell biology and senior author on the paper. "For me, and hopefully researchers studying protein interactions, this map is a dream come true."
The study is published October 28 in the journal Cell.
While genes are a cell's data repository, containing all the instructions necessary for life, proteins are its labor force, talking to each other constantly and channeling vital information through vast and complicated networks to keep life stable and healthy. Humans and fruit flies are both descended from a common ancestor, and in most cases, both species still rely on the same ancient cellular machinery for survival. In that respect, the fruit fly's map serves as sort of a blueprint, a useful guide into the cellular activity of many higher organisms.
Understanding how proteins behave normally is often the key to their disease-causing behavior.
For this study, Artavanis-Tsakonas and his colleagues provide the first large-scale map of this population of proteins. Their map, which is not yet fully complete, reveals many of the relationships these myriad proteins make with each other as they collaborate, something which, to date, has been to a large degree an enduring mystery among biologists.
"We already know what approximately one-third of these proteins do," Artavanis-Tsakonas said. "For another third of them we can sort of guess. But there's another third that we know nothing about. And now through this kind of analysis we can begin to explore the functions of these proteins. This is giving us extraordinary insight into how the cell works."
One significant use for such a map is to assess how a cell responds to changes in metabolic conditions, such as interactions with drugs or in conditions where genetic alterations occur. Finding such answers might lead to future drug treatments for disease, and perhaps to a deeper understanding of what occurs in conditions such as cancer.
"This is of extraordinary translational value," Artavanis-Tsakonas said. "In order to know how the proteins work you must know who they talk to. And then you can examine whether a disease somehow alters this conversation."
A pivotal part of this research involved a scientific technique called mass spectrometry, which is relatively new to the science of biology. The ultra-precise mass spectrometry experiments were done by HMS professor of cell biology Steven Gygi. Mass spectrometry is used to measure the exact weight (the mass) and thus identify each individual protein in a sample. It is a technique originally devised by physicists for analyzing atomic particles. But in recent years mass spectrometry was adapted and refined for new and powerful uses in basic biological research. Other studies using similar techniques to date have focused on small groups of related proteins or single celled model organisms such as bacteria and yeast.
Despite the huge amount already known about the fruit fly and its genetic endowment, much about the function of thousands of proteins remains a mystery. This map, however, now gives us precise clues about their function. Filling in the detailed protein map can help scientists gain important insights into the process of development, that is, how a creature is put together, maintained and operated.
"Our analyses also sheds light on how proteins and protein networks have evolved in different animals," said K. G. Guruharsha, a postdoctoral fellow in Artavanis-Tsakonas's lab and a first author on the paper.
Co-lead authors on the paper included Jean-Francois Rual, also a postdoctoral fellow in Artavanis-Tsakonas's lab, and Julian Mintseris and Bo Zhai, both research fellows in Gygi's lab.
Also important in this effort was the work of K. VijayRaghavan, at the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India. Similarly, crucial contributions to this work also came from the University of California, in Berkeley, where Susan E. Celniker collaborated through her studies in the fruit fly genome center.
This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

'Saw' serial killer 'basically a regular guy' the audience can respect, horror expert says. So, how does he rank among movie murderers?
By Kara Warner
John Kramer, known as Jigsaw, in "Saw"
Photo: Lions Gate Films
This week's horror-movie-themed bloodletting continues with Day 4 of MTV's Killer Halloween, an in-depth competition in which we ask you, the best and brightest fans, to vote on who is the boldest, baddest and scariest movie murderer.
Which horror-movie baddie has the best personality? Make your pick in our MTV Movies Blog poll!
Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Chucky, Michael Myers and Ghostface all have received spotlight treatment, and now it's time to turn the focus toward a seriously scary mass-murderer: Jigsaw.
Jigsaw Name: John "Jigsaw" Kramer, so nicknamed for his practice of cutting puzzle pieces out of victims' flesh who didn't "pass" his deadly tests in the "Saw" movie franchise
Occupation: Civil engineer turned sadistic self-appointed judge of others' life choices
Weapons: Practical home-improvement items found at a local Home Depot or Lowe's, along with the aid of a few helping hands here and there
Archenemy: People who waste or don't appreciate their lives, laziness
Profile: Kramer is a former civil engineer who is dying from colon cancer. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, he suddenly gains a new appreciation for life and sets out to make others appreciate what they have before it's too late. Unfortunately, and as is standard in all good horror flicks, his methods are a bit twisted. In an effort to test his victims' survival instincts, he crafts deadly and tortuous traps that play upon his captives' character flaws. He doesn't really want his victims to die, but makes it nearly impossible for them to survive.
Horror-movie expert Ryan Turek, managing editor of ShockTillYouDrop.com, explains Jigsaw's brilliance: "Behind the flayed flesh and exposed guts his messy traps leave behind, Jigsaw does have a pretty solid message to pass along:
Live your life and live it right. It's up to the people he captures to survive the blades, gears and barbed wire of his contraptions," Turek told MTV News, adding that what separates Jigsaw from other horror-movie killers is the fact that he's basically a regular guy.
"That's something that the audience can invest in and be terrified of: that lurking behind this amiable face is something incredibly deranged. That somber, withering older guy in the corner? He's quietly eyeballing you and probably has a trap waiting for you somewhere. It also helps that he's smart," Turek continued. "This is a man with an education, and to a degree, you can respect him, which is a scary thought. Jigsaw's vicious tests get the audience engaged in a discussion about right and wrong. He forces people to better themselves. I'm waiting for the day 'The Jigsaw Challenge' reality show hits television. We're not that far off, are we?"

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Private equity firms Carlyle and General Atlantic are in talks to jointly invest about $150 million to $200 million in online retailer Flipkart, according to two sources with knowledge of the deal.
Although the Indian online retailing market is small now, few people doubt that e-commerce will one day be big business in India, a country of 1.2 billion people whose rapid economic growth is adding millions to the middle class every year.
The Indian e-commerce market is expected to grow by 47 percent to more than 460 billion rupees ($9.2 billion) this year, according to the industry group Internet and Mobile Association of India.
U.S. private equity firms Carlyle and General Atlantic will pick up a minority stake in Flipkart after their investment, said two sources with direct knowledge, declining to be named as the talks are not public yet.
A deal is being held up due to differences in valuation between Flipkart and the investors, one of the sources told Reuters.
Sachin Bansal, chief executive and co-founder of Flipkart, declined to comment when reached by Reuters. Carlyle also declined to comment, while General Atlantic did not immediately respond to mail seeking comment.
Flipkart is India's biggest online bookseller, with over 10 million titles distributed from warehouses in five cities. It also sells mobile phones, appliances, gaming consoles, music and movies.
It generated $11 million in sales last financial year, and expects revenue to cross $100 million this year. It is targeting $1 billion in revenue by 2015.
Bangalore-based Flipkart had earlier raised $31 million in funding from U.S. venture capital firms Tiger Global Management and Accel Partners, which has a stake in Facebook.
The company, set up by two ex-Amazon.com software developers in 2007, got its first round of funding worth $1 million by Accel Partners in 2009, followed by Tiger Global's $30 million investment in two tranches.
The possible fourth round of funding by Carlyle and General Atlantic would help Flipkart to boost its business network ahead of Amazon's entry into Asia's third-largest economy, one of the sources said.
Amazon, the world's top online retailer, has no formal presence in India yet, though a source said last month it was mulling plans to set up retail operations in the country next year.
Private equity investment in India is accelerating, as rising borrowing costs and dormant public markets push firms to cut deals with buyout firms in return for much-needed cash injections.
Indian companies signed private equity deals worth $3.2 billion in the first nine months of 2011, up from nearly $2 billion in the same period last year, according to data from Thomson Reuters.
The deals include India's second-biggest private equity investment of the year, with Apollo Global Management injecting around $500 million in Indian steel pipe maker Welspun group in June.
India is flooded with private equity firms looking for investments -- from global buyout shops like Blackstone, 3i Group and KKR, to homegrown firms like IDFC and IFCI.

LONDON ? British lawmakers said Monday they will grill Rupert Murdoch's son James about newspaper phone hacking for a second time next month, as Murdoch's former right-hand man denied that he knew about the scale of the wrongdoing when he paid 250,000 pounds ($400,000) to a reporter convicted of illegal eavesdropping.
The House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee said James Murdoch, his father's heir-apparent, will give evidence on Nov. 10.
Rupert Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old British tabloid News of the World in July after it was accused of illegally hacking into the voice mails of celebrities, politicians and crime victims in search of scoops.
Both Murdochs denied knowing about the scale of the hacking when they appeared before the panel of lawmakers the same month, and a slew of executives from Murdoch's News Corp. media empire has kept to the same line.
Les Hinton, former publisher of the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal, told the Commons committee Monday that he had had no idea hacking was rife when he personally approved a quarter of a million pound payment to Clive Goodman, the News of the World reporter jailed in 2007 for eavesdropping on the mobile phone voice mails of royal aides.
Hinton, who was then executive chairman of Murdoch's British newspaper division, acknowledged he had seen a letter from Goodman to the company's human resources department in which the reporter alleged phone hacking was widespread at the paper and common knowledge among editors.
Hinton said he had launched a "pretty thorough" internal investigation into Goodman's claim, but said "there was no basis found for it."
He said he fired Goodman for gross misconduct, but decided to pay him the substantial sum, almost three times the reporter's annual salary, to end an unfair dismissal claim by Goodman.
"I decided at the time that the right thing to do was to settle this and put it behind us," Hinton said, giving evidence by video link from the United States.
Hinton worked for Murdoch for 52 years until the scandal, which has convulsed Britain's media landscape. In July he resigned as publisher of the Journal and CEO of Dow Jones & Co.
Hinton said Monday that he had resigned because "although unaware, I was in charge of this company at the time of the core wrongdoing."

HARTFORD, Conn. ? United Technologies Corp. said Wednesday that its third-quarter profit jumped nearly 11 percent as orders rose in double digits at several aerospace and building systems businesses. The manufacturing conglomerate raised its forecast for the year.
The Hartford, Conn., company, which makes jet engines, elevators and other aerospace and building systems components, said net income was $1.32 billion, or $1.47 per share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30. That's up from $1.20 billion, or $1.30 per share, in the third quarter of 2010.
Revenue rose 9 percent to $14.8 billion from $13.62 billion.
The results included a 6-cent per-share restructuring charge.
Analysts polled by FactSet had expected earnings per share of $1.44 on revenue of $14.55 billion.
For the second time in as many quarters, United Technologies raised its 2011 profit guidance, to $5.47 per share, up from $5.35 to $5.45 previously. It maintained its 2011 revenue guidance of $58 billion.
Shares rose 88 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $75 in premarket trading.
New equipment orders at elevator manufacturer Otis rose 19 percent from a year ago, 11 percent for heating and cooling equipment orders at Carrier and 24 percent at aerospace parts maker Hamilton Sundstrand.
It was the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit profit increases, with three of its businesses ? helicopter maker Sikorsky, Carrier and Hamilton Sundstrand ? posting substantial increases in profit for the quarter.
Profit was up nearly 32 percent at Sikorsky, which has benefited from increased military orders to support U.S. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
However, profit slumped by 2 percent, to $535 million, at jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney. United Technologies said the subsidiary's large engine business grew 3 percent in the quarter, after increasing 35 percent in the same quarter last year.
Pratt & Whitney announced last week it will spend $1.5 billion to buy out Rolls-Royce from a joint venture that makes engines for the Airbus A320. The new joint venture between Pratt and Rolls will focus on engines for new planes, once they're designed, that will eventually replace the 737, made by Boeing Co., and the A320.
It was the second major deal announced by United Technologies in a month. In September, it said it struck a deal to buy Goodrich Corp., which makes jet components such as landing wheels and brakes, for $16.4 billion.
In a statement Wednesday, Chief Executive Louis Chenevert called the agreements "transformational deals."

If you?re trying to figure out what to study in college, a new report suggests you would do well choosing a major in science, technology, engineering or math.
The report, based on Census and National Science Foundation data analyzed by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, shows that professions that depend heavily on skills learned in these fields are the second-fastest growing occupational group in the United States, after health care.
While traditional fields like computer engineering and laboratory research make up about 5 percent of the work force, demand for science, technology, engineering and math skills is spreading far beyond, to occupations in manufacturing, utilities, transportation and mining, as well as to sales and management. As a result, the study, by Anthony P. Carnevale, Nicole Smith and Michelle Melton, argues that there is a shortage of so-called STEM workers.
The scientific and technological disciplines have ?become the common currency in the labor market,? Mr. Carnevale said. With more companies concentrating on technology, ?if you?re going to sell in a technical world you?ve got to be credible,? even to be in sales, he said. ?You can?t sell to an engineer unless an engineer thinks you?re also an engineer.?
With a shortage of people trained in such fields, many technology and scientific companies in the United States are forced to recruit from abroad, the study?s authors say.
According to the study, people with talent in science, technology, engineering or math don?t often major in such disciplines during college in the first place. And even if they start out doing so, many switch majors. Of those graduating with such degrees, only 10 percent go into related fields such as engineering, physical science or architecture.
Compared with many other fields outside of these disciplines, STEM workers can earn higher wages. On average, 65 percent of those who hold a bachelor?s degree in such fields will earn more than those who hold master?s degrees in other subjects. Among those with associate?s degrees in the science and technical fields, 63 percent earn more than those who hold bachelor?s degrees in other subjects.
But there are bigger lures. While engineers, technicians and lab researchers may start out earning more than their peers in other fields, they can top out by the middle of their careers. So by age 35, a STEM worker with a graduate degree will make about $50,000 less a year than a doctor or other health care professional with a graduate degree, leading many of those with engineering, science or math degrees to choose medicine as a career. Not surprisingly, managers also make more than technicians, so talented engineers often move into the C-suite to increase their salaries.
?What?s striking to me is that I?m used to thinking of liberal arts as the foundational degree that gives you lots of options in a career,? Mr. Carnevale said. Increasingly, he said, science, technology, engineering and math are crucial to a wide-ranging career. ?You get a bigger bump going in, and almost at every stage you have other options,? he said.
But don?t count philosophy or literature out, either. Mr. Carnevale said that in surveys of employers, one of the biggest complaints about technical workers is that they ?can?t talk and can?t write a memo and have horrible interpersonal skills.? So maybe the best course of study is a double major. Physics and poetry, anyone?

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? Nearly 1,000 police officers were fired to weed out corruption from the violence-ravaged Gulf coast state of Veracruz, Mexican authorities said Tuesday.
Veracruz police chief Arturo Bermudez said 980 state agents have been dismissed in the past couple of weeks after failing lie detector and other tests. Only 27 percent in the 6,000-member force have taken the tests.
Tuesday's announcement comes four days after Mexican President Felipe Calderon said Veracruz state had been turned over to the brutal Zetas drug cartel.
The state has seen a rise in drug crimes since mid-2011. Sixty-seven people have died in two recent mass killings apparently linked to the Sinaloa cartel targeting the Zetas cartel. Calderon has deployed troops and federal police to Veracruz.
Earlier Tuesday, Mexican federal police said they detained the leader of a drug gang locked in a bloody battle for control of the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.
Christian Arturo Hernandez Tarin was detained Tuesday in the central state of Mexico, the Public Safety Department said in a statement. Police said Tarin led a gang known as "the street sweeper."
Hernandez's gang has been fighting against the local Independent Cartel of Acapulco for control of the coast city since the 2010 arrest of suspected Texas-born drug capo Edgar Valdez Villareal, known as "La Barbie."
The department said both groups broke away from Valdez's organization because they didn't like the group's new leader, sparking a wave of violence that has terrorized people in Acapulco.

JAMESTOWN, N.C. ? President Barack Obama sought Tuesday to recapture some of the bipartisan appeal that helped get him elected, while using the opportunity to assail GOP lawmakers for blocking his jobs bill.
Appearing in politically important North Carolina to promote his economic measures and his re-election, Obama promised he would work with GOP lawmakers on any serious plan they put forward to help get Americans back to work.
"I'm not the Democratic president or the Republican president. I'm the president," Obama said as the supportive crowd at a community college near Greensboro rose to its feet. The comment echoed Obama's 2008 campaign trail refrain about America being the "United States" and not simply a collection of red states and blue states.
Bipartisan rhetoric aside, Obama has had few discussions with any Republicans about the $447 billion jobs bill that Senate Republicans blocked last week. The bill is being broken into pieces so Congress can vote on its individual components.
"We got 100 percent `no' from Republicans in the Senate," Obama said. "Now that doesn't make any sense."
He said the GOP jobs plan amounts to gutting environmental regulations, increasing domestic oil production, rolling back Obama-era reforms of the financial system and repealing the health care law enacted last year.
"Now that's a plan," Obama said, "but it's not a jobs plan."
The White House denies Obama is on a campaign trip. But immediately after his remarks, the president climbed aboard his sleek, million-dollar, Secret Service-approved black bus for a five-hour ride to Emporia, Va. The bus rolled to a stop a short time later at Reid's House, in Reidsville, N.C., and the diverse crowd cheered loudly as Obama entered the restaurant for lunch.
The president worked the room, stopping to chat with one local couple who said they'd been married 59 years and joking that he and his wife, Michelle, had 40 years to go to catch up. He even complimented a local resident who said he worked in the funeral business, exclaiming, "Fantastic, that's important work!"
Afterward, Obama encountered Laketta Hussain, who was among a group waiting outside and was using a very old cell phone or a cordless phone to talk to her grandmother. Obama took the phone and spoke for a few minutes. "I'm doing good," he said, "except your granddaughter needs a new cell phone."
Obama is on the second day of a three-day tour through North Carolina and Virginia that is giving him a chance to sit back, admire the colorful fall foliage and bask in some small-town Southern hospitality.
"There's just something about North Carolina," he said Tuesday. "People are just gracious and kind. Even the folks who don't vote for me are nice to me." He recalled stopping for barbecue, sweet tea and hush puppies and playfully admonished the audience not to tell his health-conscious wife what he's been eating.
The stated purpose of the trip was to continue selling the jobs bill. But Obama is also selling himself, trying to pump up voters whose enthusiasm may have waned. That's particularly important in North Carolina, a state he wrested from Republicans in 2008 but that could slip from his grasp next November.
To try to recapture some of his electoral appeal, Obama turned to campaign staples: barbecue, babies and barrels of candy.
Obama spent more than four hours Monday driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains, which were bright with red and orange fall leaves. He stopped in Marion, population 8,075, for lunch at Countryside Barbeque. He ordered at the counter ? the barbecue platter and sweet tea ? then spent more than half an hour shaking hands and having his picture taken with the lunchtime crowd.
The tech-savvy president even helped one woman figure out how to take a photo on her smartphone.
Obama had a close encounter with one baby boy: "I think you got some biscuit on me," he said as he handed the child back to his mother.
And he made personal appeals for his economic policies, telling one table of local businessmen about his call for $50 billion more in new infrastructure spending. He said, "We're going to have to do it eventually, so why not do it now?"
Obama's unscheduled stops aren't wholly impromptu. White House staffers typically scope out areas in advance and Secret Service officers arrive well ahead of the president.
But the stops are about as spontaneous as it gets for the president, and they afford him the freedom of personal, retail politics that's often missing in the highly scripted White House.
Obama's bus, which he said was "decked out pretty good," passed crowds of people lined up on the sidewalks of small towns and residents sitting on lawn chairs in their front yards. A group of schoolchildren gathered outside their classrooms, waving small American flags. A man pulled his car to the side of the road and saluted as the commander in chief sped by.
One woman held a sign reading "We believe. We voted. Now What?" That message underscored the challenge Obama faces as he seeks to rally his supporters ahead of the 2012 election.
Key to Obama's 2008 success in North Carolina was his campaign's ability to boost voter turnout among young people. And there were plenty of them in Boone, home to Appalachian State University, when Obama stopped Monday at Mast General Store.
The store was filled with barrels of candy, which Obama started grabbing by the handful ? to help the White House prepare for Halloween, he said.

?There is no health without mental health,? said the Secretary-General, noting that mental disorders are responsible for 13 per cent of the global disease burden. ?Resources allocated for mental health by governments and civil society are habitually too little, both in human and financial terms.?
According to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), one in four people will require mental health care at some point in their lives, yet on average, global spending on mental health is still less than $3 per capita per year.
In low-income countries, expenditure can be as little as $0.25 per person per year, according to WHO?s Mental Health Atlas 2011 released today.
The global economic downturn and associated fiscal austerity measures have resulted in rising incidence of mental ill-health across the world, a situation exacerbated by the fact that the mental problems often place severe financial burden on individuals and households, Mr. Ban pointed out.
Individuals with mental health problems and their families endure stigma, discrimination and victimization, depriving them of their political and civil rights and constraining their ability to participate in the public life of their societies, the Secretary-General added.
?We cannot expect improvement in global mental health statistics unless we increase financial and other support for promoting mental health and providing adequate services to those who need them,? he said.
?Feasible, affordable and cost-effective measures for preventing and treating mental disorders exist, and are being implemented, for example through WHO?s Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP).
?However, if we are to move decisively from evidence to action, we need strong leadership, enhanced partnerships and the commitment of new resources. Let us pledge today to invest in mental health. The returns will be substantial,? said Mr. Ban.
According to the atlas, the bulk of resources earmarked for mental health are often spent on services that serve relatively few people.
?Governments tend to spend most of their scarce mental health resources on long-term care at psychiatric hospitals,? said Ala Alwan, WHO Assistant Director-General of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health.
?Today, nearly 70 per cent of mental health spending goes to mental institutions. If countries spent more at the primary care level, they would be able to reach more people, and start to address problems early enough to reduce the need for expensive hospital care.?
Mental health services should focus equally on providing patients with a combination of medicines and psychosocial care, but in lower-income countries, shortages of resources and skills often result in patients only being treated with medicines. The lack of psychosocial care reduces the effectiveness of the treatment.
Across the low-and middle-income group of countries, more than three quarters of people in need of mental health care do not even receive the most basic services, according to WHO.
?Almost half of the world?s population lives in a country where, on average, there is one psychiatrist (or less) to serve 200,000 people,? said Shekhar Saxena, Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at WHO. ?Many low-income countries have less than one mental health specialist per one million population.?
WHO launched mhGAP in 2008 to assist countries to scale up services for mental, neurological and substance use disorders. The programme provides knowledge and skills to health-care providers such as doctors, nurses and health-care workers to identify and manage these disorders.

Notice of failure are usually delivered by mail. If you can not arrive in time for the creditors, then make it the worst situation since the time of the hearing in which the creditor does not take a situation that you have objections to claims will create.
So, every time that the creditor expects an announcement of failure to an address that is easy to reach on time should be preserved. Given the option for creditors is to talk about their preferred addressAlthough it does not belong to them.
The ability to provide a preferred e-mail address, fax number or choose an address for the creditor is given by the NCR, namely National Creditor Registration Service. The creditors will receive instructions on paper by mail sent to any address given by them. Parenting troubled teenagers is one of the toughest tasks to parents and parents want to consider any sort of help which help them to deal with their troubled teenagers. As teen anger problem is the most considerable teen issues for parents a few tips from my experience and the first important tip for parents to consider is to recognize the teen anger problem is a sensible issue.
Being a sensible issue it needs to be planned to deal in that way. The second parenting tip to consider is to talk with your teens respectfully because being a teenager, some of the teens don?t like to be ordered. You will be surprised to see the results when you request them to do the things. Teens love to follow the requests.
Third parenting tip to consider is to understand the feelings of your teen instead of asking repeated questions on what had happened earlier, asking repeated questions on any issue make teens to become very angry and it may leads you to listen unusual answers. So think a bit in place of your teen in that situation and if you think their behavior is correct at that time then you understand the thing, if it is wrong then look for a time when they usually chat with you, discuss with your right suggestions on that issues.
Fourth important parenting tip to consider is to provide them possible options in some of your activities, this will help teens to learn new life skills such as responsibility, punctuality and creativity in doing an activity. Providing options not only help them in this way but also teens will think they are not just kids and they are handling all the activities by themselves.
Fifth important parenting tip to consider is to allow teens to understand the consequences of their mistakes, as a parent we don?t want to see or hear our teens facing problems but being covered to your teen in each and every thing is also not beneficial for them. You should allow them to take their own decisions by themselves.

What to add and what not to add is the question every home owner seeking improvement will ask. Home improvement involves the reorganization and upgrading of the indoor and outdoor environment.
For a lot of home owners, the landscaping is really important. Landscaping influences the mood or aura of your home, a home with a pool and a fountain translates to a tranquil and serene environment. Moreover, a garden that is well kept with beautiful landscaping could be an attraction to homebuyers when and if you do eventually decide to put your home on the market.
Home improvements are a great investment in your house and you get a more comfortable and beautiful home in the process. There are two main methods of home improvement; you could choose to do a complete overhaul of your home or just do a remodeling project.
Home improvement remodeling is much less expensive than a complete overhaul and could be anything from changing your kitchen floors to changing the heating system in your home.
The kitchen is one of the more popular home improvement remodeling projects. The areas for remodeling in a kitchen are vast and there is always something extra you could do to enhance the look of your kitchen and add more value to the home as a whole. Some kitchen home improvement remodeling projects could be as complex as placing an island in a kitchen that had none before or could be simply refacing existing cabinets.
The bathroom is another area that is the focus of home improvement remodeling. There is just so much that can be done in a bathroom. You could simply change the tiles and there are many tiles to choose from including ceramic tiles or you could change the whole look of the bathroom; add an oriental or eastern feel to your bathroom.
You could also decide on an addition to your existing home such as a patio. You might want to change the look of our present patio or add a patio where one did not previously exist. Concrete slabs are quite common even though tiles of different materials are gradually gaining popularity.
Whatever form of home improvement remodeling you eventually decide to engage in, it is realy important to make sure that you are making the most of your money. This should be done by ensuring that the materials you are using are of the highest quality, to avoid your having to replace materials soon after the project is done. Furthermore, working with a qualified and reputable home improvement company is imperative to make certain that you are getting value for your money.
Home improvement means that you are adding value to your home, which translates as a prudent investment. You get the added advantage of living in a beautiful environment that affords you maximum comfort.
