Podolak suffered several injuries, including two broken legs, after being struck by a car in February. Wednesday, Dolphin announced that he's battling prostate cancer.
University of Iowa radio play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin announced Wednesday that he is battling prostate cancer.
The 60-year-old Dolphin, who?s going into his 15th season as the voice of Iowa football and men?s basketball, said the cancer was caught early and he expects to fulfill his duties in the booth. He was diagnosed in May and started treatment Tuesday.
In a statement, he urged men age 50 and above to be vigilant with their health.
?My doctors are confident they?ve caught the cancer in the early stages and I will attack it aggressively with radiation treatment,? said Dolphin. ?Barring unforeseen circumstances, I expect to fulfill all my responsibilities to the University and Learfield Sports, where football and basketball are concerned.
?In the meantime I would appreciate the prayers and well wishes from Hawkeye fans all over the country. I?d also like to urge ALL males, age 50 and above, to have the simple PSA blood test performed. It could save their life.?
Dolphin has served as host for the weekly coaches show on radio and television, featuring Kirk Ferentz and Fran McCaffery. He also represents the UI Athletics Department at countless benefits, fundraisers and I-Club events throughout the year.

Dophin?s news follows the ongoing recovery of his booth partner, Ed Podolak. The Iowa football analyst was hit by a car in Arizona in February. He suffered numerous injuries, including two broken legs. He?s been doing his rehabilitation in Iowa City since early spring.
Podolak also plans a return to the booth for Iowa?s Sept. 3 season opener against Tennessee Tech.
?Its turned out to be a trying year for Eddie and me,? Dolphin said. ?I draw a lot of inspiration from guys like Ed and Norm Parker [who lost his right foot to diabetic complications last fall] given all they?ve been through. I want an attitude just like theirs as I proceed through treatment for my cancer.?
