Stocks slipped on Wall Street as troubling economic news from China and the U.S. outweighed optimism about the prospect of more stimulus from the Federal Reserve.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 52.35 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 13,254.29.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 8.84 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,429.08.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 32.40 points, or 1 percent, to 3,104.02.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 1,036.73 points, or 8.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 171.48 points, or 13.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 498.87 points, or 19.2 percent.
