In the near future, a war rages on the floating city located off the coast of San Fransisco known as The Ark.? This once-Utopian city has fallen into disarray as the Resistance and the Security forces fight over essentials like food and water.
I have been anticipating this game for what feels like forever, and now it?s finally here and worthy of the wait.? I had been holding off on buying a game this year, and I?m proud to say that my first purchased game of 2011 was ?Brink.?? The game covers all the bases; the art style is very similar to ?Borderlands,? which I love.? Also, the co-op feels a lot like ?Borderlands? as well.? It contains both the fast-paced action of the ?Call of Duty? series and the objective-based tactical warfare element of ?Battlefield.?? All of that makes for an extremely addictive game.? Now, there are some areas where I feel Splash Damage failed, but I?ll get to that later.
You get to choose from three different body types: Heavy(takes more damage but slower), Middle(average amount of health and pretty mobile), and Light(less health but really quick and can jump higher), and you are able to switch between these type whenever you choose.? I really feel it?s a little stupid to be able to change your character?s body frame at the drop of a hat but you can?t change your voice or skin color.? There are some kinks in the S.M.A.R.T. system, but it works- it just takes some getting used to.? I feel as though if they had put a little more effort and time into fine tuning S.M.A.R.T. (which is the main selling feature of the game) it would make the overall gameplay feel more fluid.? Many times I would go to jump onto a box and realize it would have been faster if I had just taken the stairs.
Missions are short.? Depending on what your objective is, you could finish one of the missions after just the first objective.? Although the story and idea of the the game seems pretty good, it is in no way shape or form fleshed out.? It is still fun and addictive to play.? The easy difficulty is hard, and normal is insane, so I could just imagine what the hard difficulty is like.? The main problem I find with the gameplay is that your companion A.I. is beyond stupid and of no use to you whereas the enemy A.I. is crazy intelligent and can actually hold their line and keep you from completing your objectives.? You should want to get invested in the characters regardless of what side you?re fighting on, and to help that the stories should have been longer.? I am hoping that because of the shorter storylines we can expect DLC expansions fairly quickly to keep peoples? interests peeked.
Multiplayer seems like a chore and it is extremely laggy, BUT if you?re a fan of ?COD? then I want to hear no complaints because the lag is no worse than the lag in ?COD.?? Co-op, however, is the shit, and that is where I spent the majority of my time.? Like I said before, the enemy A.I. is very smart and very tactical, and your companions are dumb as a rock.? You will hear a call go out that a command post is being taken or has already been taken and your comrades just leave you to either defend an objective and take an objective by yourself and that?s where having a buddy with you comes in handy.? Co-op campaign and single player campaign are exactly the same, so if you?re going for achievements or trophies you can get them all in co-op.
The challenges are insanely hard because of (again) the A.I.. Everywhere you turn there?s an enemy and when you take him down another one is there to revive them, and this challenge is what makes the game so addictive.? What I don?t understand is why if when you play the challenges alone you have a team of soldiers there useless but at least they?re there, but when you play in co-op it is just you and your partner(s) it doesn?t make sense.
GOOD:
- Artwork is a lot like ?Borderlands.?
- Because of enemy A.I. difficulty, challenges and the story give the game high re-playability.
- S.M.A.R.T. is a new and innovative feature.
- Character and weapon customization is really cool.
BAD
- S.M.A.R.T. still needs some work.
- Companion A.I. is that of a 3rd grader at best.
- Both storylines are incredibly short.
- LAG! (but to be fair the game isn?t on a dedicated server I always complain about lag).
I recommend that everyone play this game even if you don?t buy it at least rent it to play it, and play with friends only to avoid the dreaded lag.
Final Verdict for BRINK:
