Wellness, Wellness Everywhere ? Legit or Not?? ? Getting Great Spa

A few days ago, I listened to SpaFinder Wellness president Susie Ellis present her highly anticipated SpaFinder 2013 Spa Trends. Interestingly, five of the top 10 trends deal directly or indirectly with Wellness and it made my heart sing!

So when I opened the January issue of ?ISPA?s Pulse Magazine this morning and found Anna Bjurstam?s article ?Wellness Shift: A Look at How Spas Can Keep Up with Change? that highlights 3 different areas of?wellness opportunities for spas: fitness, nutrition & healthy eating and beauty & anti-aging, it made my day and maybe even my week!

What does it tell me? That overall, wellness in spas isn?t just a trend anymore ? it?s here to stay and it?s up to us to help people understand what role spas play in contributing to their overall health and wellbeing.

Instead of going away, Stress is on the rise ? everywhere ? regardless of gender, occupation, income level or social engagement. And the common denominator for every organism that experiences stress is to try to find a way to get rid of it ? from the simplest organism up to yours truly.

This is where spas have the edge in the whole Wellness paradigm. Go to a doctor and he or she will make every effort ? usually ? to cure you of whatever ails you. While this might relieve the stress induced by the illness or complaint, it doesn?t necessarily take care of the stress you?re feeling about other things in your life, right? That?s where spas come in.

Spas that are serious about providing treatments that benefit mind, body and spirit are a terrific resource for getting back in synch. You are a thinking, feeling, emotional and physical being and when ?one or more of these areas are out of whack (stress!), you need to get them back in balance. A massage, a reflexology treatment, a body treatment or even a manicure with a hand and arm massage that engages your full attention, (known as mindfulness), can have a significant impact on reducing stress.

Dr. Daniel Friedland, president-elect of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and Founder/CEO of SuperSmartHealth, says, ?By integrating mindfulness with massage, clients will not only reduce stress during the treatment, but by engaging in the ongoing component of mindfulness, they may also experience the benefit of brain changes that enable them to become more resilient in coping with stress on an ongoing basis.? [1]

And even if you?re not ?mindful? and just looking for a few moments of relaxation, you?re still going to experience some form of stress reduction because that?s what healing touch can do for you (what happens when the therapist isn?t fully engaged is a completely different topic altogether).

Mindfulness is a huge component of Wellness and a topic you?ll be hearing more about in the months to come. Jeremy McCarthy, a leading spa expert and director of Global Spa Development and Operations for Starwood Hotels & Resorts recently noted, if the last decade was all about ?happiness,? the next will be all about ?mindfulness.? [2] And don?t worry, you can still go to your favourite spa to be pampered ? you?ll just be surprised at how less stressed you are!
