Report: US student fights for life after chimp attack

An American studying chimpanzee behavior in South Africa was ?fighting for his life? after he was attacked by two of the animals, according to a report.

The chimpanzees dragged the man for more than a mile, under a fence and into their enclosure at Jane Goodall Institute Chimp Eden near Nelspruit, The Telegraph newspaper reported.

The paper said the victim of the attack had not been named. However, it said it understood he was a ?young university student from the United States who had been observing the animals at the reserve for several weeks.?

Jeffrey Wicks, a spokesman for private ambulance firm Netcare911, told the Telegraph that witnesses said the man was leading a group of tourists when the attack happened.

"A ranger at a chimpanzee sanctuary near Nelspruit is fighting for his life after he was attacked by two frenzied animals while leading a tour group at the park this afternoon," he added. "According to eyewitnesses, two chimpanzees grabbed the man by his feet and pulled him under the perimeter fence and into the enclosure."

Armed escorts for paramedics
Paramedics needed armed escorts as they went in to treat the victim, NBC?s Rohit Kachroo reported. It was unclear whether this caused any delay.

NBC's Meredith Vieira sits down with Charla Nash, who recently underwent a face transplant that's helped her regain the life she had before being brutally attacked by a chimp.

The victim was stabilized at the scene and taken by ambulance to a private hospital in Nelspruit, NBC said. There have been no similar attacks at the reserve, which opened more than six years ago.

David Oosthuizen, Jane Goodall Institute executive director, confirmed the reserve was on lock down following the incident, The Telegraph said.

A game of peek-a-boo between a chimp and three-year-old twins turns from laughter to screams at the Honolulu Zoo. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.

"We understand that the gentleman is stable and we really feel for him," he told the paper. "This has been very upsetting for everyone ? it is just horrific. We are an organization that's respected worldwide for the work we do so anything like this is very bad."

Victim of chimpanzee attack shares progress, optimism

He added that some of the animals kept there had been abused before they were rescued and taken to the institute.

"These chimpanzees have six times the strength of a human being so you have to respect them and we certainly do," he said.

Brilliant sound from Bose players | bose wave radio system 3, mp3 ...

bose wave radio system 3, mp3 player transmitter

Everyone loves listening to music. Do you ever hear your favorite song come on all you want to do is just sing out loud? There?s nothing like enjoying the end of a Sunday afternoon and just listening to some of your favorite music while the sun sets. You?ll want to make sure that your sound system is of the highest quality, like a Bose wave radio system 3.

Bose is known for having superior sound quality. It?s actually quite amazing considering how compact most of the devices are. They can really go in any room and fill it with brilliant sound quality. There are also Bose players that are portable and can be taken outside or inside as you need. I was recently at a house party where we ate outside and our host brought his Bose player to the backyard where we enjoyed the soft music while we ate.

Bose players also feature FM/AM tuners. So if you want to listen to a baseball game while relaxing in your pool you can do it. If you?re looking to upgrade you sound system here are some Bose players to consider:

  • Bose Wave Radio III
  • Bose acoustic wave music
  • Bose Acoustimass 5 III
  • Bose SoundDock Series II

Don?t let your iPod or mp3 player be limited to only being played in your home either. With a mp3 player transmitter you?ll be able to listen to all of your songs in your car. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve found myself browsing from radio station to radio station just looking for something good to listen to. I always end up wishing I could just listen to the music on my iPod. This can all be made possible with the mp3 player transmitter.

Now you can enjoy your music wherever you go. Whether it?s the gym, the beach, a car ride, or in the comfort of your backyard you music can be with you.

NBA Draft 2012: Cavs Continue to Rebuild with Additions of Waiters and Zeller

Head coach Byron Scott commented in April that he did not expect the Cleveland Cavaliers to make the playoffs in 2013. This odd remark was not a degradation of the team, but a look into the collective conscience of the entire organization.

Patience is the key for fans during this era of rebuilding, and that patience was tested on draft night when the Cavs shocked the NBA for the second year in a row by reaching on the No.4 pick in the draft and selecting Syracuse guard Dion Waiters.?

An hour later, the Cavs traded away the rights to the No.24, No.33 and No.34 picks to the Dallas Mavericks for North Carolina center Tyler Zeller and NBA veteran small forward Kelenna Azubuike.

The evening was an emotional roller coaster for fans who initially booed the Waiters pick?at the Cavs' draft party in Quicken Loans Arena. Jeers turned to cheers when the trade for Zeller was announced, but the overall tone of the evening was confusion.

Just a week removed from watching the Miami Heat win their first NBA Championship, Cavs fans are struggling with the desire to win immediately or build for the future.

Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller are not as glamorous as the thought of Bradley Beal or Michael Kidd-Gilchrist running the floors at The Q, but the truth is that both Waiters and Zeller are already the best players at their respective Cavalier positions.

An influx of young talent, however, will not be able to hide the gaping hole at small forward and lack of depth. Omri Casspi was a disappointment in 2011-12, and fan favorite Alonzo Gee would be an able sixth man at best on most NBA teams.

The key moment will come next year during the 2013 draft. This will be the third draft in a row with at least two first-round picks; and if Sacramento can avoid being a lottery-bound team next season, the Cavs could acquire a third.

Having already drafted four of the five positions in Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller during the rebuild, the Cavs have the luxury of going all-in on the best small forward in the draft.

It is still doubtful that the Cavs will be aggressive in free agency until the young core team has had an opportunity to play a full season together. As long as GM Chris Grant can keep their spending at a minimum, the team will be in a position to grab some players in the 2014 free-agent class (that topic is for another article).

Until then, go Cavs!

Ruling could leave the poorest at greatest risk

Former Medicaid and Medicare director Donald Berwick says few states were likely to reject the Medicaid funds despite the court's decision.

By M. Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

Updated at 7:04 p.m. ET: Now that the Supreme Court has upheld President Barack Obama's health care initiative, will Congress have to rewrite it from scratch?

It's not a paradoxical question. The court signed off on nearly all of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but it struck down one provision, and in doing so ? whether it knew it or not ? it may have put the poorest Americans at the greatest risk of being left without any health insurance.

Chief Justice John Roberts said as part of the 5-4 decision that states can't be penalized for refusing to join the law's expansion of Medicaid eligibility. Health law experts said that had the practical effect of flipping an all but mandatory program into one a state can choose not to join.

Here's the problem: The ACA creates state health insurance "exchanges," providing tax credits to eligible residents to buy affordable, state-certified health insurance. But the poorest Americans aren't in that eligible pool, because the law assumes they'll be covered by the expansion of Medicaid, which is no longer a given.?

In states that reject the expansion, poor residents could be left without either form of coverage ? as many as 15 million if all 50 states opt out, a circumstance that former Medicaid director Donald Berwick said was highly unlikely.

The White House didn't address the issue in a long Q&A it issued on the court's decision. The statement touted every provision of the act but one: Medicaid expansion.

Medicaid currently covers only some low-income people, primarily parents with children, pregnant women, people with severe disabilities and senior citizens. Adults without disabilities or children, in other words, aren't generally covered. That's the group the Medicaid expansion was supposed to help the most.

Supreme Court upholds health care mandate

Obama calls ruling victory for US; Romney vows to repeal

After the ruling: Lots left to do on health reform

Full ruling from the court

If their states opt out, young working adults below the poverty line could be in a Catch-22, because "they may not get Medicaid, and they may not be eligible to purchase insurance through the exchange," said Christina S. Ho of the Rutgers University School of Law, who was a member of President Bill Clinton's Domestic Policy Council.?

It works this way:

The insurance tax credits are targeted at people with incomes between 100 percent and 400 percent of the poverty line as determined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Congress sought to compel the states to cover everyone under the line through Medicaid.

The federal government promised to fully cover all expenses for the expanded coverage before eventually pulling back to cover 90 percent after a few years. The states would have to pick up the extra 10 percent eventually.

States aren't required to take part, but if they don't, the law as enacted would have turned off the flow of all Medicaid funding from Washington.?

That enforcement mechanism is what the court invalidated Thursday, meaning there's no penalty for a state that says, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Twitter reactions to the ruling

Because states haven't had time to consider yet whether they will opt in or out. it's difficult to say how many people could be affected.?

But about half of the nearly 50 million uninsured Americans have incomes below the new eligibility thresholds, according to the latest report, in October, from the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. And about 6 in 10 of them are adults without dependent children ? the primary beneficiaries of the program's expansion.

If you do the math, roughly 15 million Americans could be in the newly created gray area. In 2010, when the act was passed, the Commonwealth Fund, an independent health care policy foundation, similarly calculated that the Medicaid expansion would benefit 12 million of the 15 million uninsured Americans under the poverty line.?

Donald Berwick, former head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which administers the two programs, said few states were likely to take that risk.

"Those people are still living in your state, They're still poor. They're going to come to your emergency room. They're going to be operated on, and they're going to have diseases that get worse, and you're going to have to pay for that. That will come from the state ? free care pools and charity in the state," Berwick said in an interview on MSNBC-TV.?

"I think what's going to happen is the states are going to be under pressure from providers of care who say: 'Why are you leaving this money on the table? Let's join in with the federal dollars.'"

But Judy Solomon, vice president for health policy at the nonpartisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, agreed with Ho that the decision means low-income adults could lose the promise of Medicaid coverage "even while people with somewhat higher incomes will be eligible for premium tax credits."?

Writing on the center's policy blog, Solomon said: "The poorest adults ? primarily parents and other adults working for low wages ? will be left out in the cold."

PFT: Bruschi would pick title over Hall any day

Fred DavisAP

It?s the Summer of Law for the NFL, and the latest piece of legal news relates to a fascinating case that somehow has remained off the radar screen for more than a year.

Redskins tight end Fred Davis was sued in early 2011 by Makini Chaka, a 33-year-old self-described ?celebrity broker,? who says she organizes parties for famous people.? Luke Mullins of the Washingtonian tells the story of the litigation and its various twists and turns, including the fact that Davis has been acting as his own lawyer.

And it shows.

?It?s just all made up and flagellant,? Davis told the judge during an April 10 hearing.

Chaka, who also is representing herself, claims Davis dumped juice on her head and busted her lip at a D.C. nightclub.? She also has accused Davis in court documents of assaulting, harassing, and threatening to kill her.? Chaka obtained a temporary restraining order in January 2011, which she has since claimed Davis violated.

The court proceedings have included Davis accusing Chaka of procuring prostitutes, an allegation Chaka has denied.? The April hearing featured an exchange regarding whether Chaka has her hand on a man?s genitals in a photograph.

Davis: ?As it shows, you also have your hand on his genitals. I mean why would you take a picture like that??

Chaka: ?I do not. Let?s look closely at the exhibit right here, Judge. Where is my hand placed in this exhibit??

Judge: ?I do not answer questions. . . . The witness does.?

Chaka: ?Can you tell me where my hand is actually at in this photo??

Davis: ?It looks like it?s in the genitals to me. I mean your hands are on his genitals. Your hand is on his ??

Chaka: ?Objection.?

It?s unclear why Davis, who signed a one-year franchise tender earlier this year with the Redskins, doesn?t have a lawyer.? Though it may not be the smartest move Davis ever made, it?s sure to provide even more entertainment as the litigation continues to unfold.

Trial is set for March 11, 2013.? Here?s hoping that one of the litigants requests a change of venue to the courtroom of Judge Sapp.

Starship Troopers Reboot Could Be Less Violent

Paul?Verhoeven's '80s sci-fis tiptoed between kitsch and corrosive with such brass that people are still debating which bits are meant as satire and which bits aren't. His loose triptych of subversive sci-fis - Starship Troopers, Total Recall and RoboCop - are all getting a redo, with the former still in the early stages of development. In the new issue, Empire caught up with producer Toby Jaffe to find out what's planned for the former.

"The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent," explains Jaffe, also one of the team behind the Colin?Farrell's Total Recall. "With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way."

It's news that will land with a thump in the hearts of bug-hunt purists, but hardly a surprise. It's hard to imagine Verhoeven's gleefully violent RoboCop or Troopers sneaking through the studio system these days, and, explains Jaffe, there's little point retreading old? ground. "Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more."

What's planned sounds like it will ditch the satire in favour of a straighter action play. "Verhoeven made his movie a critique of fascism," says Jaffe, "whereas Heinlein was writing from the perspective of someone who had served in?World War II. Y'know, one man's fascism is another man's patriotism..."

One element that will improve with age is the hardware. If the militaristic elements are less tongue-in-cheek, those nukes will be bigger and better. "Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armoured exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before."

Pick up the new issue of Empire from Thursday for a fresh look at Verhoeven's trippy trilogy and more from Jaffe and co. on the new generation of films.

RE: This Really Bugs Me
Please people! Learn the difference between a remake and a new adaption. This is gonna be a new adaption of the book. And I look forward to it. I was a great fan of the movie until I read the book. And what a great book, and a horible interpretation. Mr Veerhoven just couldnt grasp what the book was about. He was disgusted and didnt even finnished it. And that says it all. Yes the movie is easy fun and the vfx are great but it has nothing to do with the book. I welcome a faithful More

This Really Bugs Me
Instead of remaking all of Paul Verhoeven's great sci-fi movies, I wish the great man would just be given the money to make a new one. He could return to the genre like Ridley Scott did with Prometheus. None of these remakes will be anywhere near as good as they're made by copycat hacks. Verhoeven is a true auteur and ultraviolence was and is his trademark. More

Well atleast we will get crap CGI "jump packs"
Who cares if they remove a large chunk unique factors of what made Verhoeven's film unique and a success in almost every regard outside of gross. I would probably be more concerned if I believed this film was a sure thing but I am having a hard time believing this remake will happen. Total Recall 2012 looks average at best, and the details so far for Robocop also come off as "meh". More

RE: A word about the VFX
L: Galahadfairlight The comment from the producer to suggest they couldn't do the jump suits back in 1997 is patent nonsense, Verhoeven removed them largely to stop the Humans from being virtually indestructable, and to make them have a believable weakness against the bugs. The VFX for Starship Troopers still stands up today as being excellent, and I very much doubt that the VFX for the new incarnation are remotely going to make the old movie look silly! couldn't agree more. One of the most underrated, misunderstood and t of the 90s, if anything, Starship Troopers is even more subversive than the sublime how the Verhoeven version was a merciless piss-take of Heinlein's po-faced fascist tract - I will take the sight of Doogie Howser dressed like Herr Flick and solemnly intoning "There's a brain bug on Planet P!" with me to the grave. front lines: Victor Davis Hanson - Legal Illegal Immigration

President Obama recently issued an edict exempting an estimated 800,000 to 1 million illegal aliens from the consequences of federal immigration law. Ostensibly that blanket amnesty applies to those who arrived before the age of 16 and are younger than 30; who are in, or graduated from, high school or have served in the military; and who have not been convicted of a felony or multiple misdemeanors. And while most Americans sympathize with helping those who were brought into the United States as toddlers, raised as de facto Americans and followed the rules, the policy of exempting hundreds of thousands en masse in the long run may create far more problems than it solves.

First was the cynical timing. In 2009 and 2010, Democrats had a supermajority in the Senate and a majority in the House and could easily have enacted such a law over all opposition. So why was the edict handed down in a tough campaign year?

Then there is a problem of constitutionality, an especially serious issue for former constitutional law lecturer Barack Obama, who ran on the premise that he would restore respect for the separation of powers. But as seen in the reversal of the order of the Chrysler creditors, the attempt to shut down a non-union Boeing plant in South Carolina, the decision not to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, and the recent use of executive privilege not to hand over Fast and Furious documents, this administration sometimes just bypasses a now-difficult Congress to rule by fiat.

The move contradicts Obama's earlier claim that a de facto amnesty "would not conform with my appropriate role as president." He later reiterated that "some people want me to bypass Congress and change the laws on my own," but "that's not how our system works."??? More

Apple Posts $2.6 Million Bond, Blocks Sale of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Apple was somehow able to scrape up the necessary $2.6 million dollars for the bond needed to block sales of Samsung?s Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple posted the bond almost immediately after winning an injunction against the iPad competitor.

AppleInsider:

Apple?s posting of the bond means that the injunction has taken effect and Samsung must cease stateside sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, or the company could be sanctioned for contempt, according to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents.

The $2.6 million bond posted by Apple is to protect Samsung in the event that the Korean electronics giant appeals the injunction and wins. If the injunction is found to have been improperly granted, Samsung could receive the money to compensate for any losses.

Apple was granted the injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Tuesday by U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh. In her ruling, she said that Samsung ?does not have a right to compete unfairly by flooding the market with infringing products.?

Samsung has already filed a motion to stay the injunction pending its appeal, saying the court ?erred by issuing a preliminary injunction based on a stale and incomplete record.?

A month remains before Apple and Samsung square off in court, their patent infringement lawsuits are scheduled to go to trial in late July.

Maybe dinosaurs were warm-blooded

Dinosaurs may not have been the slow, sunbathing reptiles researchers used to think. In fact, they may have been warm-blooded, new research suggests.

The researchers studied the "growth lines" on animal bones, which are similar to the growth rings in tree trunks. During slow-growing times like during the winter, they are darker and narrower, while in fast-growing times the bones have lighter, wider bands.

Figuring out if dinosaurs were warm-blooded endotherms (made their own body heat) or were "cold-blooded" ectotherms that relied on outside sources of warmth could illuminate a lot about how they lived, grew and evolved. How warm an animal is has an impact on their metabolism, and therefore how quickly they can grow and have babies.

Of bones and blood
Previously, scientists had thought that growth lines showed up only on the bones of cold-blooded animals, since these animals grow in fits and starts. Warm-blooded animals, like mammals and birds, are assumed to grow continuously, because they keep their temperatures up and have high metabolic rates, continually making energy to grow.

As such, researchers took the growth lines on dinosaur bones as evidence of their cold-bloodedness. Until now.

In this study, the researchers compared the bone lines from the leg bones of more than 100 wild ruminants (warm-blooded mammals like sheep and cows that have multiple stomachs) with seasonal rainfall and temperature cycles and with the animal's core body temperature and resting metabolic rate. The researchers showed that these warm-blooded animals also have bone growth lines indicating fast, yet interrupted yearly growth that depended on how long the "unfavorable" season lasted. [ Image Gallery: Dinosaur Fossils ]

Hot dinos
The growth lines they found on the ruminants were similar to those seen in previous studies of dinosaur bones ? indicating that both ruminants and dinosaurs have periods of high growth punctuated by "unfavorable" seasons with limited resources and little growth. This means that dinosaurs were likely warm-blooded like the ruminants.

"The argument we are giving in our paper, rather in favor of endothermy in dinosaurs, is that between the growth and rest lines, there's always a big region of highly vascularized (infiltrated with blood vessels) tissue that indicates very high growth rates," study researcher Meike Kohler of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain told LiveScience. "This is typical in dinosaurs and very different from reptiles, which have slow growth between the rest lines."

Sauropods were the only dinosaurs where researchers haven't seen growth lines similar to those of ruminants. Previous studies of their teeth indicate they would have had high body temperatures as well, though they might have been big enough for their mass to generate that heat ? what researchers call a "gigantotherm." Researchers don't know what their growth lines would have looked like, since no animals alive today are gigantotherms.

    4. Missing link for wonky-eyed flatfish found

Fast growth?
This indicates that "dinosaurs also had very fast growth rates and needed to eat a lot and maintain high generation of heat internally," Kohler said, so they were most likely warm-blooded.

The theory that dinosaurs were warm has been gaining traction in the last few years in multiple fields, but the researchers admit that other, non-bone-based arguments for cold-bloodedness still stand. Endotherms should have the physical ability to move quickly, and lung volume to pump oxygen to muscles needed for running, which researchers can't be sure dinosaurs had.

"There are a lot of arguments in favor and against endothermy in dinosaurs," Kohler said. "It could be that they have some traits that are clearly endothermic," but others may be muddled.

The study was published Thursday in the journal Nature.

Robot beats you at rock-paper-scissors every single time

21 hrs.

When someone claims they're good at rock-paper-scissors, they're usually just trying to psyche you out so they can predict your next move. But this robot, created by the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory in Japan,?doesn't need to psyche you out, because it knows it will beat you every single time.

How can it do it? One thing it certainly doesn't do is any kind of high-level analysis of the game. It doesn't put your last sequence of moves through a complex semantic analysis and try to predict the move. It doesn't use anti-random tactics like "five scissors in a row" to throw you off. All it needs is a high-speed camera and quick reflexes.

Yes, the robot cheats. By watching the image from a camera that can determine the position of your hand every millisecond, it is aware of your move the very moment you make it. And as soon as your hand starts to form that rock, the robot is giving you some paper to wrap it up. At the very end of the video, you can see the tiny delay between the human making a move and the robot reacting ?? but it happens so fast that you wouldn't notice except when shown in slow-motion.

Doesn't seem fair, does it? But since humans can't see or react on a millisecond timescale, such a tactic would never even be considered. It's precisely because reaction time doesn't come into it that rock-paper-scissors?becomes a game of psychology or dumb luck. Similarly, our vision isn't good enough to read a person's cards in the reflection of their eyes, and we're not skillful enough with our hands to control the outcome of dice.

Robots, on the other hand, could be fast enough, far-sighted enough, or precise enough that they could do any of those things. In this case, the robot can think and react in the time it takes you to make your play. Sure it's cheating ?? but it's still quite a trick.

The lab built the setup to show how quickly a robot arm and vision system could accommodate human input; that hand could just as easily be remotely operating in a hostile area or amplifying those movements to pick up construction materials. They have many other interesting?projects along this line documented on their Web?page.

Of course, what everyone wants to know is: What happens if they build a second one and have them play each other?

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. got the nod this week when the organization picked the defending Nationwide Series champion to replace Matt Kenseth in the Sprint Cup Series when Kenseth leaves at the end of the season.

No announcement was made regarding Trevor Bayne, the 2011 Daytona 500 winner, who just as easily could have gotten the promotion to a full-time Cup ride.

Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark said Wednesday the decision to move Stenhouse up over Bayne was a matter of timing.

"We feel like both of them will be staples in the Cup Series for many years," Newmark said. "But Ricky is completing his third full season in Nationwide, and we haven't even run Trevor one full season yet."

Bayne ran the full Nationwide schedule in 2010, although the first 28 races were with Michael Waltrip Racing. He was scheduled to do the full schedule in 2011, but an illness contracted after a spider bite sidelined him for five races.

Sponsorship woes this season forced RFR to suspend Bayne's Nationwide program after five races. He's now running a limited Cup schedule with The Wood Brothers, an affiliate of Roush and the team Bayne took to Victory Lane last year at Daytona.

Stenhouse, meanwhile, won two races en route to his first Nationwide title. This season, he has three wins and third in the standings.

"The goal for Trevor is to have him do exactly what Ricky is doing right now ? run a full-time Nationwide program and challenge for the championship," Newmark said. "It would be our hope and expectation to have him in that car next season."

Roush has had sponsorship challenges this season: The cars for Kenseth and Stenhouse have limited funding, and the organization is paying out of pocket for some races, while Bayne's team was shuttered when money didn't come through. Roush also let David Ragan go at the end of the season because a lack sponsorship sidelined the No. 6 Cup team for all but one race, the Daytona 500 with Stenhouse.

Newmark said sponsorship wouldn't necessarily be the deciding factor next season for Bayne in the Nationwide Series.

"We've shown before that when it comes to driver development, sponsorship is a factor, but it's not the only factor," he said.

Roush officials are also working on getting Stenhouse into some Cup races this season, but Newmark did not indicate where or when.

And, it's not clear what number Stenhouse will drive next season. He's currently the No. 6 in Nationwide, and that's been a flagship number for Roush in the Cup Series. Kenseth has used the No. 17 for his entire Roush career.

"The number is not something we have put much thought into, but it will be and we'll have a discussion in the coming weeks," Newmark said. "Right now the important focus is on getting him into Cup, not that the number is not important, because it is to Ricky and to Jack. But either way, we have two numbers that are pretty near and dear to Jack's heart."

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

16 hrs.

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."
