Vin Diesel: Dungeons & Dragons fueled creativity

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Dungeons & Dragons inspired Vin Diesel as a child, and having children of his own changed how he sees his killer characters.

The action star appeared at Comic-Con Friday to help unveil footage from the new "Riddick" film.

Diesel says the roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons was a "training ground for imagination" and helped him embrace the mythology of Riddick's world. But becoming a father made him see Riddick's dark side in a new way.

"What's inside Riddick is so scary that now that I have kids, when I watch the Riddick character, there' s a part of me that feels guilty for having such a darkness in that character," he said. "I look at what he's doing and I go, 'That isn't cool, you shouldn't have killed that guy.' It's only because I have kids now."

Diesel also hinted at a future in the Marvel universe when responding to a fan question, saying only, "There's some very big news coming at the end of the month."

India school tragedy raises questions for Gandhi's food plan

By Sruthi Gottipati and Mayank Bhardwaj

RAIPUR/PATNA, India (Reuters) - The deaths of at least 23 Indian children poisoned after eating a free school meal has triggered an outcry over food safety just as the ruling Congress party is set to launch an ambitious plan to feed 800 million poor, with an eye on elections due within a year.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's national subsidized food project includes free school meals and expands existing handouts to make it probably the biggest welfare initiative since India gained independence in 1947.

"It's a political move designed to garner support for Congress among the poor, which has been its traditional constituency," said Zoya Hasan, a professor at the School of Social Sciences in New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The National Food Security Ordinance aims to give five kg (11 lb) of cheap grain every month to 800 million people and more than doubles the reach of the existing subsidized food system, whose failings still mean the country is home to a quarter of the world's hungry.

But the school tragedy in Bihar state, the nation's second poorest, highlights the potential dangers of rolling out a major food distribution scheme without strict monitoring of supplies and quality and having to hand responsibility to local authorities, many of whom have weak administration.

In Bihar, the children's deaths prompted protesters to burn effigies of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, chanting slogans denouncing the state government and setting fire to vehicles.

"This terrible tragedy will hopefully serve as a wake-up call for them," said Reetika Khera, development economist and social activist, adding programs like this need to be administered at the local level.

Currently, nearly half of India's annual rice and wheat supplies are lost to rot or corruption, and while deaths from contaminated food are rare, many of the country's poor are offered substandard food, sometimes containing stones and grit.

"This (tragedy) does throw light on food quality in public programs," said Dipa Sinha, Right to Food researcher and activist. "It is clearly a failure of monitoring and accountability."

Under Gandhi's food welfare plan, grain distribution will be devolved to local communities, but critics say few details have been revealed and question how the scheme will be administered. The Bihar tragedy may raise more questions over Gandhi's plan.

The Congress party, which controls only half of India's 28 states, won the last two elections after introducing populist policies such as a rural jobs plan and a $12.5 billion farmer loan waiver.

The food security bill, Gandhi's pet project, was approved on July 3 using executive orders, usually reserved for urgent policy. Gandhi plans to launch the program on August 20, the birthday of her late husband and former prime minister, Rajiv.

Parliament must decide whether to agree or reject the measures within six weeks of the next session's start on Aug 5. While opposition parties and some government allies complained about the decision to use an executive order to drive the plan through, the bill is expected to be approved.

Under the scheme India, one of the world's largest food producers and consumers, will buy about 30 percent of its 198 million tons of rice and wheat output to sell at subsidized prices. The scheme will cost an estimated $22 billion a year.

ROTTING FOOD

At a warehouse in Naubatpur village, one of the storage hubs for grain in Bihar, pigs grunt and squeal in filthy pools of water that lap at rotting rice spilt from hessian bags.

Farmer Shambu Sharma picks up a handful of the black, stinking grain that has not yet reached the poor and shakes his head as it spatters his white trousers.

"This all comes back to the villages for distribution," he said, dismayed the rice he had grown was now virtually inedible.

Bihar's chief minister Kumar, not a Congress party member, has succeeded in reviving the state's economy since coming to power in 2005, but has struggled to feed the millions of poor due to continuing corruption and a lack of storage.

In 2011, only 18 percent of people living below the poverty line in Bihar received their subsidized grain rations, according to a survey by a team led by development economist Jean Dreze.

Under Gandhi's welfare food project, Bihar will have to distribute 7.2 million tons of grain per year, double what it now handles, yet it lacks adequate storage. It is building more warehousing but it will not be completed before the election.

But Kumar is slowly making progress and, in a warning for Gandhi, it is the chief minister and not Congress that is winning praise among farmers and beneficiaries for the efforts.

Bihar has issued colored coupons to the poor, which has started to ensure cheap grain reaches the most needy, and in turn improved the livelihoods of some voters.

"Since the government has issued coupons, it has been easier to buy from ration shops and I end up saving what I used to spend on buying from the open market," said cycle rickshaw driver Daud Hussain.

"With the savings, I can buy a new school uniform for my daughter," added Hussain, who now saves about 50 rupees from earnings of about 250 rupees a day.

INDIA'S "RICE SAINT"

In another state, Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Raman Singh is known as "the rice saint" for his success in tackling corruption and red tape to deliver food to the poor. His efforts have also paid political dividends, helping him get re-elected in 2008.

Singh has dramatically improved the state's grain distribution using technology to track supplies closely and giving local community groups rather than private dealers the responsibility to provide the cheap grains to village residents.

He has also put state finances into the scheme to raise the price paid to farmers for harvests, reduced even further the cost to consumers of the subsidized grains, increased the number of people eligible, and added protein-rich lentils to the menu.

In 2011, 97 percent of Chhattisgarh's poor received their allotted grain, according to Dreze, the economist.

"This is a matter that concerns the whole country," Singh, who is not a Congress party member, told Reuters. "If they replicate our state's model, there won't be a need for a debate. Everyone would agree with this."

In Seoni village on the outskirts of Chhattisgarh's capital Raipur, Dhanush Kumar Sahu sits among sacks of wheat and rice, weighing rations for a stream of women who come clutching tattered ID cards in gnarled hands to his shop.

Sahu is at the retail end of a closely-monitored supply chain that takes grain from farmers' fields, moves it to government-owned warehouses and distributes the sacks in government trucks to his door.

Rice is sold at 1-2 rupees (1.6-3.2 U.S. cents) per kg depending on need - less than the federal government's subsidized level of 3 rupees per kg - and it covers more people than targeted by New Delhi even with the proposed expansion.

"Since the rates have changed, everyone comes to take the rice," Sahu said, while a customer ran rice through her fingers to check its quality.

Fox News parts ways with Liz Cheney after Senate run launched

(Reuters) - Fox News has parted ways with Liz Cheney, the eldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, after her announcement that she will challenge incumbent U.S. senator and fellow Republican Mike Enzi in Wyoming, a spokeswoman for the network said on Wednesday.

Cheney, 46, launched herself into the race on Tuesday with a nearly six-minute Web video in which she laid out a conservative agenda, saying the federal government was too large and wasted taxpayer dollars, and sharply criticized Democratic President Barack Obama.

Cheney appeared as a political analyst for Fox News, where she was first hired as a contributor in early 2012, a Fox News spokeswoman said. She said Cheney's contract was terminated on Tuesday after the Senate run was announced, but gave no further details.

Cheney, who describes herself in a biography on her official campaign website as a "fourth-generation Wyomingite," is an attorney who served in the U.S. Department of State during the administration of President George W. Bush.

Cheney's announcement comes as Republicans, who control the U.S. House of Representatives, seek to regain a majority in the Senate in the 2014 elections, and political analysts said a bitterly contested primary campaign could be worrisome for the party.

Highest Paid Tight End In NFL (Gronk) Takes Train To New York

Gronk-NYC-Train

Why should you not worry that Gronk, the NFL?s highest paid tight end, going broke like so many other athletes? This guy has to be the cheapest bastard playing football. Sure, late in 2012 he paid $1,600,000 for a Tampa house, but this guy will then take a train to New York City.

According to @KevDol, that?s Gronk (above) yesterday on his way to NYC from what we assume was the Boston area.

And wearing a Zubaz hat that Zubaz sent to him. And a t-shirt that was also probably given to him.

Could he have helicoptered into the city? Yep. Could he have taken a quick flight? Of course. Could he have car service take him in? Uh huh.

Train.

But this is what?s great with this guy and why we can?t get enough of his antics. Man of the people.

And then he was spotted last night bro-ing out on the streets of Manhattan sorta getting his ?Summer of Gronk? on. With training camp so close, Gronk will need to turn in a powerful 10 days or else this summer will be over and he?ll be answering media questions about Aaron Hernandez.

Gronk-NYC-Bro-Time

Looks like it was a one night deal.

Department of Education is ? | What is this ? - Top definitions

The Department of Education is the executive department of the Philippine government responsible for ensuring access to, promoting equity in, and improving the quality of basic education. It is the main agency tasked to manage and govern the Philippine system of basic education. It is the chief formulator of Philippine educational policy and is responsible for the Philippine primary and secondary school systems. It has its headquarters at the DepEd Complex in Meralco Avenue, Pasig City.

The department is currently led by the Secretary of Education, nominated by the President of the Philippines and confirmed by the Commission on Appointments. The Secretary is a member of the Cabinet. The current Secretary of Education is Bro. Armin Luistro, FSC.

During the early Spanish period, education in the Philippines was religion-oriented and was primarily for the elite, especially in the 1st years of Spanish colonization. Access to education by Filipinos was later liberalized through the enactment of the Educational Decree of 1863, which provided for the establishment of at least one primary school for boys and girls in each town under the responsibility of the municipal government; and the establishment of a normal school for male teachers under the supervision of the Jesuits. Primary instruction was secularized and free, and the teaching of Spanish was compulsory. It was also through this decree that the Superior Commission of Primary Instruction was established, the seminal agency of the Department of Education.

Cory Monteith overdose spotlights surge in heroin addiction and death

The number of heroin addictions and deaths among young people, many of whom previously abused prescription drugs, has risen dramatically, experts say. Cory Monteith battled addiction for years.

By Stacy Teicher Khadaroo,?Staff writer / July 18, 2013

A pedestrian walks past photographs and flowers placed at a memorial for Canadian actor Cory Monteith outside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Monday, July 15. Officials in British Columbia, where Mr. Monteith grew up and where he died at the age of 31 at a hotel on Saturday, warned this week of a recent spike in deaths related to heroin.

The overdose death of ?Glee? star Cory Monteith has put a spotlight on an alarming rise in the number of young people becoming addicted to heroin ? and dying from its effects, particularly in combination with alcohol or other drugs.

An earlier surge in prescription drug abuse ? and the recent crackdown on that trend ? is one of the key factors behind increased heroin addiction, drug-abuse experts say, explaining that often, those who use prescription drugs in search of a high start to see heroin as a cheaper way to hit those highs or to stabilize withdrawal symptoms.

A large share of the emerging new heroin users are 18-to-25-year-olds, many of whom are white and middle class.

A rise in overdoses and related deaths are partly related to this spike in newer users of heroin, ?who have not yet developed the strong tolerance to the drug that more traditional longtime users would have,? says James Hall, an epidemiologist at the Center for Applied Research on Substance Abuse and Health Disparities at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Fla. Without that tolerance, he says, the new users are more vulnerable to even mild increases in the purity of the street drug.

There?s also been a rise in a combination of drugs being involved in overdose deaths, Mr. Hall says. Even if heroin is not taken simultaneously with alcohol or prescription drugs, the presence of those substances in the system can increase the combined toxicity.

Officials in British Columbia, where Mr. Monteith grew up and where he died at the age of 31 at a hotel on July 13, warned this week of a recent spike in deaths related to heroin laced with the drug fentanyl. But the coroner reported that Monteith?s death did not involve fentanyl.

The number of people who abused or were dependent on heroin increased from 214,000 in 2007 to 426,000 in 2011, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, reported by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

More recent statistics are available from regional experts around the country who track trends for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Recent increases in heroin problems were reported in at least 11 areas of the country, ranging from Minneapolis to Atlanta, says Hall, a member of the NIDA group.

In South Florida, which Hall monitors, the number of heroin deaths jumped 60 percent between 2010-11 and 2011-12. In the 35 heroin deaths there in the first half of 2012, all but one involved additional substances.

In Texas, both supply and demand indicators for heroin have been increasing, and the average age of those dying from heroin overdoses dropped from 40 to 36 in five years, according to Jane Maxwell, a University of Texas epidemiologist in the NIDA group.

In Washington State, among 18-to-29-year-olds, more treatment is now sought for heroin abuse than for alcohol abuse. ?That?s a stunning and very rapid change,? says Caleb Banta-Green, a research scientist at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington who has studied the links between prescription drugs and heroin.

In 2012, among high schoolers surveyed in the state who had used prescription opiates to get high in the past month, 23 percent had used heroin at some point. Among those not using prescription drugs to get high, only 3 percent had ever used heroin.

Efforts to crack down on the availability and abuse of prescription drugs in recent years made it easy to anticipate a rise in heroin use, says Eliza Wheeler, program manager at the Harm Reduction Coalition in Oakland, Calif. Policymakers should have anticipated that and built in ?more access to treatment, to overdose prevention, and to HIV/Hepatitis prevention,? she says.

The problem of drug overdoses and deaths extends far beyond the use of heroin or other illicit drugs. In the United States, drug abuse was the leading cause of injury and death in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the roughly 38,000 drug overdose deaths that year, 60 percent were related to pharmaceuticals; 78 percent or more were unintentional.

To tackle these problems, society needs to address the ?huge disconnect between what we know about addiction and what we do to address it,? says Susan Foster, vice president of CASAColumbia, a substance-abuse research center at Columbia University in New York.

Monteith?s story of struggles with addiction starting in his youth ? which he had sought treatment for as a 19-year-old and again as recently as April ? is fairly typical: about 95 percent of addictions start with substance abuse in the teen years, Ms. Foster says.

Instead of seeing ?risky use as a rite of passage,? she says, people need to better understand that the risk of addiction is about six times greater for young people, whose brains are still developing, than if they first use substances when they turn 21 or older.

Secondly, Foster says, when people do have treatment, it?s often not based on up-to-date science on what can most help them recover from their addictions.

Drug-abuse prevention and treatment has been separated from the medical community, and there need to be more bridges, Foster and others say.

?People want to think of addiction as acute ? you go and get fixed ? but it takes a long effort,? Ron Jackson, an expert on drug abuse and treatment at the University of Washington in Seattle. Addiction goes beyond physical dependency and becomes an emotional attachment, he says. ?It?s difficult to break that?. Think of the thing most dear to you and having to walk away from that.?

While many efforts are being made to prevent addiction or help people recover, there are also advocacy groups working to educate people about how to reduce overdoses among those who continue to struggle with drugs.

Some states have Good Samaritan laws to encourage people to call 911 to help in an overdose situation without fear of being arrested.

A movement is also afoot to increase information about naloxone, a drug that reverses potentially fatal breathing problems associated with opioids, including heroin.

Since the mid-1990s, more than 10,000 deaths have been prevented through training more than 53,000 people to administer the drug, according to the CDC. Since that survey of about 50 programs in 2010, the number of programs promoting naloxone use has risen to about 200 nationwide, Ms. Wheeler says.

In Monteith?s case, as in many overdose situations, he appears to have been alone when he died, according to police.

Amid the alarming statistics on heroin use, one bright note is that, for the first time, Mr. Banta-Green in Washington has seen a decline in the number of high schoolers using prescription opioids (down from 10 percent in 2006 to 6 percent in 2012).

?Reining in the prescription drugs hopefully will prevent or help to slow down a new generation in terms of getting addicted,? he says, ?but in the meantime, for the people who are 20 who are already addicted, we still have to take care of them for the next 50 or 60 years.?

Guy That Sells Fake Twitter Accounts Makes Over $128,000 In 10 Months, He Says

Not a day goes by when our inboxes aren't spammed by people wanting to sell us fake Twitter users. Turns out, there's a good reason. It's insanely profitable.

James Clegg, who operates a fairly large-scale fake follower business, raked in $128,000 in profits in the last 10 months, reports PC World's Christopher Null.

He's done so well in this business, he quit his day job as an accountant, he told Null.

Clegg offered the inside skinny on his operations:

He runs 13 follower-sales websites, he says. He needs many websites because Google dislikes the fake-follower business. So each site has to use a constantly changing search-engine optimization scheme to show up in search results.

(It works though. We just typed in "Twitter followers" and low-and-behold, the first search result was for "Twitter Followers | Buy Twitter Followers | Free Twitter Followers ...")

The fake follower business is a numbers game. The going rate is $11 for 1,000 Twitter followers and a typical order is for about $30. A server with a high search result could pull in 80-100 orders per day, he says. (It might also charge more. The fake follower site we found from our Google search charges $17.50 for 1,000 followers.)

It's not all profit. Clegg hires programmers in India to produce the "bots" (short for robot) that creates the fake Twitter accounts. Out of every $6,000 in revenue, he makes about $2,000 in profit, he says.

Buyers include minor celebrities, big corporations, practical jokers, but it's mostly small companies who don't want people to know they've only got 20 or so real Twitter peeps, Clegg says.

Just so you know, buying or selling Twitter accounts is a clear violation of Twitter's rules. If Twitter finds these fake accounts, it will delete them.

An ATM is displayed at a Wells Fargo bank, Tuesday, July 16, 2013, in Atlanta. Banks large and small are girding for an elaborate drill this week that will test how they?d fare if hackers unleashed a powerful and coordinated attack against them. The exercise is being called ?Quantum Dawn 2,? and if the name sounds like a video game, it?s also meant to convey the seriousness of a big threat.

It's a war game, Wall Street style.

Banks large and small are girding for an elaborate drill this week that will test how they would fare if hackers unleashed a powerful and coordinated attack against them.

The exercise is called "Quantum Dawn 2," and if the name sounds like a video game, it's also meant to convey the seriousness of the threat.

Cyber-attacks on the banking industry are growing more frequent and sophisticated and the list of assailants is ever-changing: crime bosses who want money, "hacktivists" who want to make political statements, foreign governments that want to spy on U.S. companies. A successful, widespread attack on the industry would shake confidence in the banking system, and the possibility has banks and regulators on edge.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of the country's biggest bank, JPMorgan Chase, acknowledged that attacks are becoming more complex and dangerous, no longer carried out by "fairly simplistic" hackers commandeering people's personal computers.

"Now you're talking about state-sanctioned folks, hundreds of programmers," he said in a call with reporters this spring, "taking over not just PCs but servers and mainframes."

JPMorgan and peers like Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo have signed up for Thursday's drill, which is being organized by Wall Street's biggest trade group, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, or SIFMA.

About 50 banks and organizations will participate, including government agencies like the Treasury, the Department of Homeland Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the FBI.

During the drill, bank employees will be stationed at their normal offices, and will be blasted throughout the day with bits of information that could indicate an encroaching hacker attack. They'll monitor a simulated stock exchange for irregular trading and will be pressed to figure out what's going on and how to react while sharing information with regulators and each other.

As the name suggests, this isn't the first Quantum Dawn. The original drill was in November 2011, and it attracted scant attention and only about half as many participants. But that was before a wave of cyber-attacks last fall, when big banks were forced to temporarily shut down their websites after attackers bombarded them with traffic ? akin to overwhelming a phone line with too many calls.

"If you went to banks three years ago, and said, 'What are your top five risks?', probably none of them would put cyber on there," said Karl Schimmeck, SIFMA's vice president for financial services operations. Now, he said, the calculation has changed.

Software giant Symantec calculates that cyber-attacks against U.S. businesses jumped 42 percent last year. Banks, though, are reluctant to give more details about how they're affected, financially or otherwise, for fear of becoming a target, and attacks often go undetected and unreported.

Whatever the number, banks and the government are on high alert. President Obama warned about international hacking against the banking industry in February's State of the Union address. He later met with JPMorgan's Dimon, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan and other business leaders to discuss the threat.

Big banks have started listing cyber-attacks as a potential risk factor in filings for regulators and investors. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates national banks, recently held a call with community bankers to warn them that they're not free from danger either: Since September, attacks have been increasingly aimed at businesses with fewer than 250 employees, the OCC says.

Banks realize the threat isn't going away. If anything, the possibility of an online attack will grow as customers do more transactions online and banks outsource operations to other companies whose systems might not be as secure.

Says Greg Garcia, a former DHS official who now runs the consulting firm Garcia Cyber Partners: "If someone asks, 'When are you going to stop cyber-crime?' Well, when are you going to stop crime?"

The banks downplay the risk of hackers tapping into any individual customer's account. For most, that will never happen, the banks say, and even if it did, the customer wouldn't be responsible. Customers would have to go through certain steps to get their money back, like filing a claim, showing that they weren't negligently tossing their account information around and giving the bank time to investigate. But federal regulations protect retail customers from being held accountable when money is removed from their accounts without permission.

US Diplomat: Troops Not Leaving Afghanistan Anytime Soon

The longest war in US history now set to last even longer as US balks on alleged 2014 deadline for withdrawal.

The US military is likely to stay in Afghanistan far beyond the 2014 alleged deadline for withdrawal,?James Dobbins?the State Department?s special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan?told the Senate earlier this week.

The statement came after an?article?published Monday in the?New York Timessuggested that Obama plans to move more quickly on troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The US diplomat made it clear that, to the contrary, the US intends to continue its open-ended occupation. ?The Afghans actually need us to stay,? Dobbins alleged,?according to?Reuters. ?Most Afghans want us to stay. And we have promised to stay.?

?It is important to ask who wants the US to stay,? Robert Naiman?policy director forJust Foreign Policy?told?Common Dreams. ?Is it Karzai, the parliament, a majority of the Afghan people? And what do they want troops to do? Detain Afghans? Carry out night raids? Conduct drone strikes??

?As usual, helping Afghanistan is conflated with keeping thousands of troops there,? Naiman added. ?There?s no reason those things should be conflated.?

As the US-led war in Afghanistan?now the longest official war in US history?stretches through it?s 12th summer, over 60,000 US troops remain, in addition to vast webs of US private contractors and US appointed Afghan military generals.

The Afghan civilian death toll remains?alarmingly high, with drone attacks?killing far more civilians?than manned air crafts, stoking outrage across Afghanistan. Meanwhile, attacks on Afghan children are skyrocketing, the UN?reports.

Over?2,000 U.S. service members have died?in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, with an unknown number lost to suicides and high-risk behaviors as repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan compound PTSD and other mental health problems.

Meanwhile,??green on blue? attacks, in which members of Afghan forces kill US ones, continue across to define the US-Afghanistan relationship, signaling that resentment against the US occupation even extends to its Afghan military ?partners.?

The US has little to show for the open-ended war, with alleged ?peace talks? recently?falling apart?over purported Afghan objection to US negotiations with the Taliban.

David Warner gutted at his contribution to Mickey Arthur's sacking as Australian cricket coach

By Ben Horne

David Warner says he's gutted his drunken antics in a Birmingham nightclub contributed to Mickey Arthur's sacking as Australian coach.

After he found out he'd been dropped for the first Ashes Test, Warner revealed he broke down and cried on the phone to his mother.

The 26-year-old was all smiles at his media conference on Monday in London, but expressed an understanding of the effect that punching England's Joe Root has had on those around him.

Warner must shoulder blame for Australia being bundled out of the Champions Trophy, Arthur getting the axe and teammates suffering a heartbreaking 14-run loss to England at Trent Bridge.

He can earn back the respect of the dressing room and fight his way back for the third Test at Old Trafford, but he can't return Arthur his job.

Arthur had supported Warner through his recent off-field dramas, and even Cricket Australia (CA) admitted the coach had been made a scapegoat in many respects for the team's poor discipline.

Since then, it's emerged the South African had hired lawyers to seek further compensation from CA, as the fallout continues.

It's obvious that Warner's ugly night out led to Arthur's demise.

"It was probably another thing that was gutting, that I may have played a part in that," said Warner.

"But that's the business we're in and James Sutherland explained the reasons why that happened. We have to move on from that and now Darren (Lehmann) is the coach and we respect Darren 100 per cent."

On a personal level, Warner has been left to accept the fact his poor behaviour has cost him at least two Test matches and means he must fly to Africa on Tuesday to fight his way back to the Test team.

If he needed any reminding of why he was sitting on the sidelines, crossing paths with Root in the lunch room at Trent Bridge would have sufficed.

Warner will play two matches for Australia A against Zimbabwe and South Africa A and, if he scores runs, he's likely to come into the side at No.6 for Old Trafford.

But already, he's had his Ashes dream shattered and Warner says he's learned his lesson.

Now it's time for his actions to back up his words.

"I rang my mum and dad and told them I wasn't playing. And I kind of broke down on the phone to mum," he said.

"It's just one of those things you ask your mum and dad - what could I have done better in those situations? - and you don't want to really go into it as much but I've matured a lot since that incident.

"It was massive to miss a Test. As a kid growing up, you want to play in the Ashes and, after that incident, I went back to my room and I was pretty shattered for a week and a half, two weeks.

"I still feel the guilt of what happened. I feel myself it's led to me being in this situation at the moment. Things would have been different, I would have been able to play those warm-up games and I could have pressed my claims to play in this first Test, but that's me.

"I put my hand up and accepted the consequences and now it's about me putting as many runs on the board these next two games and press forward.

Rallies against Zimmerman verdict being held in US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From New York to California, outrage over the acquittal in George Zimmerman's murder trial poured from street demonstrations and church pulpits Sunday as protesters called for justice for the unarmed youth he killed and demanded federal civil rights charges against him.

Protests were scheduled in Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, San Francisco and other cities over the Florida case, which unleashed a national debate over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. One protest in California hours after the verdict late Saturday ended with vandalism while police dispersed another crowd by firing beanbag rounds.

In Washington, the Justice Department said it is looking into the case to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has been acquitted in the state case.

In a statement Sunday, the Justice Department said the criminal section of its civil rights division, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office for the Middle District of Florida are evaluating evidence.

President Barack Obama called the death of Trayvon Martin a tragedy for the country and urged calm reflection, a message shared by religious and civil rights leaders hoping to ensure peaceful demonstrations in the wake of a case that became an emotional flash point.

In Manhattan, congregants at Middle Collegiate Church were encouraged to wear hooded sweatshirts in the memory of Martin, the black teenager who was wearing a hoodie the night he was shot to death in February 2012.

The Rev. Jacqueline Lewis, wearing a pink hoodie, urged peace and told her congregation that Martin Luther King Jr. "would have wanted us to conduct ourselves on the highest plane of dignity."

But "we're going to raise our voices against the root causes of this kind of tragedy," she said, adding, "We'll aim our fight for justice against the ease with which people can get firearms in this country."

Congregant Jessica Nacinovich, wearing a hoodie, said she could only feel disappointment and sadness over the verdict.

"I just wanted to come and be here with everybody in solidarity and talk and pray and sing about where we go from here," she said. "I'm sure jurors did what they felt was right in accordance with the law but maybe the law is wrong, maybe society is wrong; there's a lot that needs fixing."

At a youth service in Sanford, Fla., where the trial was held, teens wearing shirts displaying Martin's picture wiped away tears during a sermon at the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church.

Hours after the verdict, demonstrators gathered on U Street in Washington, D.C., chanting, "No justice, no peace." One protester carried a sign that read, "Stop criminalizing black men."

In Florida, about 200 demonstrators marched through downtown Tallahassee carrying signs that said "Racism is Not Dead" and "Who's Next?"

In Chicago, black clergy members called for calm, with the Rev. Ira Acree of Greater St. John Bible Church saying the community should become "a united voice for peace" because it can't control the verdict but it "can control our streets and communities."

About 200 people turned out for a rally and march in downtown Chicago, saying the verdict was symbolic of lingering racism in the United States.

Seventy-three-year-old Maya Miller said the case reminded her of the 1955 slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered by a group of white men while visiting Mississippi. Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

Miller said she felt as if "nothing has changed in 58 years."

The NAACP called for the opening of a civil rights case against Zimmerman in an online petition addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder.

Civil rights leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, urged peace in the wake of the verdict. Jackson said the legal system "failed justice," but violence isn't the answer.

But not all the protesters heeded those calls.

In Oakland, Calif., some angry demonstrators broke windows, burned U.S. flags and started street fires. Some marchers also vandalized a police squad car and used spray paint to scrawl anti-police graffiti on roads and Alameda County's Davidson courthouse. In Los Angeles, police said a crowd of about 100 protesters surrounded an officer and two people threw bottles when more police arrived. The officers used beanbag rounds to disperse the crowd.

Most protests were peaceful, however.

In Manhattan's Union Square, hundreds of people gathered to voice their passions over the verdict, hoisting placards with images of Martin.

Some tempered their anger, saying they didn't contest the jury's decision based on the legal issues involved.

But "while the verdict may be legal, a system that doesn't take into account what happened is a broken legal system," said Jennifer Lue, 24, an Asian-American resident of Harlem.

"Everyone should feel about this, whether you're Asian-American or African-American," she said.

Music industry groups band together to promote eco-friendly ...

Whether it?s giant tour buses criss-crossing the country or thousands of fans littering concert venues, the music industry isn?t always the most environmentally friendly.

After the 2011 South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, one official called the entertainment industry ?the second-dirtiest industry in the world.?

But key leaders in the music industry are trying to fix that, and they don?t mind if you call them environmentalists.

Artists, recording studios and instrument manufacturers are combining to promote eco-friendly practices in music. Among instrument manufacturers, major guitar companies are focusing on obeying conservation laws and promoting sustainable forestation practices for materials used in their products.

Last year, Nashville-based Gibson Guitar Corp. agreed to pay $300,000 on charges that it illegally imported wood from Madagascar and India, a violation of the Lacey Act of 1900, which prohibits importation of wildlife, plants and wood harvested in violation of foreign laws.

CEOs Chris Martin of C.F. Martin and Co. and Bob Taylor of Taylor Guitars are among supporters of the Lacey Act, and they say the law doesn?t restrict their business ? it just forces sustainable practices and environmental awareness.

?I?m all for environmental sustainability in music,? Taylor said. ?It?s just about foresting properly.?

Taylor operates his own facilities in Cameroon, so he can ensure his materials are forested sustainably, legally and not in a way that?s harmful to anything or anyone else. He says that?s the easiest way to ?do it right, environmentally.?

Guitar manufacturers have relied on valuable spruce, rosewood, mahogany and ebony wood materials from such countries as Brazil and India since Martin?s ancestor Christian Frederick Martin Sr. built the first guitar in America in the 1830s. The industry is watching these materials dwindle rapidly, and many expect this will lead to a change in guitar-making altogether.

A tough sell

Chris Martin says if the time comes when guitars must be built from alternative materials, it won?t be easy to convince consumers that?s good.

?One of the things that we struggle with is the tradition that we have created around the instruments,? he said. ?We?ve done such a good job that it?s difficult to convince customers that other woods or other materials are appropriate.?

?As an acoustic (guitar) builder, protecting the rainforest and the hardwood is an obligation we have,? said Tom Bedell, co-owner of Two Old Hippies and Bedell Guitars.

Environmental activism in the industry isn?t limited to instrument makers. Adam Gardner, frontman for Boston-based band Guster, is well-known for being active on environmental issues. In 2004, he co-founded Reverb, a nonprofit dedicated to spreading environmental sustainability in music tours and throughout the music industry.

Reverb has worked with many popular artists to help make their tours ?green,? among them, the Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jack Johnson.

Gardner says the platforms offered to popular bands such as Guster provide a valuable opportunity for spreading awareness.

?We can use it as a platform to support campaigns and organizations and to educate fans about what they can do to make shows less impactful,? Gardner said.

Gardner said Reverb?s mission is to involve artists and fans equally in a greater initiative for sustainable practices in live music. The group works on ride-share programs to cut down on travel emissions and with waste management groups to ensure no garbage is left behind. It also sources food and merchandise locally and organically.

The artists? job, he said, is to show fans that environmental sustainability is possible, and easy.

?It?s about the tour being a working example to the fans,? Gardner said. ?Artists can directly solve the issue and show the fans, ?Hey, look at what we just did to help the environment. Join us.??

Martin and Taylor say they would definitely be open to partnering with a group such as Reverb to help promote the issues, and Gardner agrees.

?Music has always been in the throes of social change,? he said. ?Us in the industry, we?re in such a unique position to make change.?

Low in northeastern Gulf of Mexico given only small chance to strengthen

The National Hurricane Center says a low pressure area in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico has little chance to develop into a tropical system, but they are monitoring it.

According to a 2 p.m. ET advisory, there are strong upper-level winds that are likely to limit it's development and the NHC gives it only a 10 percent chance of becoming a? tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.

A second system, off the east coast of Florida, is also being given a 10 percent chance of development. That system, the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal, is expected to move northward and merge with a frontal boundary.
