Articles 20VN | Do the Dishes - Connecting With the Simple ...

One of the chores I had to do, actually the only chore I had to do when I was a kid, was wash the dishes. For years I washed the dishes by hand as we didn't have a dishwasher. I can remember complaining about my difficult lot in life. It seemed like such a hard task. Now that I am an adult and have a dishwasher I don't have to worry about doing the dishes by hand. However, due to a dishwasher malfunction, I am realizing how much I have been missing.

My dishwasher began leaking so I had to stop using it for a couple of days. This sent me into a panic because I wasn't sure what I would do about the dirty dishes. I thought about using paper plates, but that didn't seem like an earth friendly option. I also considered eating out for all three meals, but that didn't seem like a waist friendly option. So, I decided to do the unthinkable and wash the dishes by hand. At first this sent me into a panic because it has been years since I have washed a dish. I wondered if I could get the dishes clean enough, or if it would take all. Once I began the project all my fears subsided and I got a nice surprise.

I found washing the dishes to be calming. It wasn't something I could rush through and there wasn't anything else I could do but wash the dishes. I had to slow down, focus and be present. As I was washing the dishes a flood of memories came rushing back to me of my Grandmother teaching me to wash dishes. She always told me that a blind person could get the dishes clean because they would feel the dish. She always made me run my hand over each dish I washed so I could feel if there was anything still stuck it. I also have memories of gatherings where, after the meal, all of the women gathered in the kitchen to do the dishes, talk and laugh. As I washed the dishes, I realized it was actually an enjoyable task, I felt like I was accomplishing something and I could wash the dishes in less time than it took the dishwasher to go through a cycle.

Not that I am going to start washing the dishes by hand every day, but I will start washing them on occasion. I found that doing this simple task actually was pleasurable and it helped me reconnect and relax. Simple tasks can do that. Not that you have to start reverting back to doing everything manually, just once in a while do a simple task the old fashion way. Sweep the floor instead of using the vacuum or write a letter instead of typing it out on the computer. When you do a task manually, it will help to slow you down and allow you time just to be.

Who knew that doing the dishes manually was such a simple pleasure? I believe the trick to this is to slow down and be present with what you are doing. So often we are multitasking and not paying attention. You don't focus because you can't focus. Practice doing one thing at a time and doing it to the best of your ability. This will force you to slow down and pay attention. You will be surprised at how refreshing this can be.

It is vital to remember that a marriage band is never, if ever, removed; hence this must be a practical ring as well as a stylish one.

The Celtic designs are based around symbols from the Celtic history and culture. Some of these designs are perfect for making the prettiest wedding rings. The normal Celtic twist and knot designs are one of the most popular options.

Are We Ready For A True Cloud Phone?

Screen Shot 2011-08-12 at 3.05.27 PMAs we approach the fall, all the rumors of the Apple empire descend upon us.?And this year may be the craziest yet because for the first time since the iPhone's inception, Apple did not release new hardware in the summer. And there are still whispers of an iPad revamp as well. iOS 5 is coming. iCloud is coming. And then there are the iPods which are traditionally updated in the fall timeframe each year. Things are already getting crazy enough that potential Apple announcement dates are topping Techmeme one minute, and then stories debunking those dates are?the top story in tech the next minute. This will only get worse. But there's a reason people write up these rumors. Because people read these rumors. And the reason they do that is because sometimes those rumors are correct. And more often than that, they're at least?somewhat?correct. That hope keeps peoples' imaginations running wild. Now it's time for me to indulge that.

DARPA Readies Hypersonic Aircraft for Mach 20 Launch Test (SPACE.com)

DARPA will launch the second flight test of an unmanned hypersonic glider Thursday (Aug. 11) to test technologies needed for a new global strike bomber concept designed to fly 20 times the speed of sound.

The ultra-fast vehicle, called the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2, is slated to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California atop a Minotaur 4 rocket after a one-day delay due to bad weather.? Liftoff is set for sometime between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. PDT (10 a.m to 4 p.m. EDT).

Mach 20, or 20 times the speed of sound, varies depending on elevation and air temperature, but the Falcon will be traveling in excess of 13,000 mph. At that speed, it could travel from New York to Los Angeles in less than 12 minutes, and friction with the air can heat it up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit. [DARPA's Video Plan for Hypersonic Test Flight]

The HTV-2 is part of a DARPA plan called Prompt Global Strike. If testing is successful, it could be used as an advanced weapons system whose incredible speed makes it capable of knocking out any target in the world within an hour of launch. ?

DARPA's first Falcon test, HTV-1, did not go as planned. Researchers lost contact with the vehicle nine minutes into the first flight test in April 2010, and failsafe programming caused the Falcon HTV-2 to make a controlled dive into the ocean.

Researchers are hoping to push the vehicle further and gather more data with this subsequent test.

"DARPA looks forward to conquering more unknowns about long-duration hypersonic missions.? We need to increase our technical knowledge to support future hypersonic technology development," said Dave Neyland, director of DARPA?s Tactical Technology Office. "We gained valuable data from the first flight, made some adjustments based on the findings of an engineering review board to improve this second flight, and now we?re ready to put all of that to the test." (DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and is part of the U.S. Department of Defense.)

Some changes include an adjusted center of gravity and lower angle of attack (angle at which the vehicle hits the air).

A Minotaur rocket will launch the HTV-2 nearly into Earth orbit, then the HTV-2 will detach and follow a glide trajectory at Mach 20. More than 20 sensors will collect data during the flight.

The HTV-2 could replace the current intercontinental ballistic missile systems. There were only two HTV-2 prototypes built and DARPA has no plans to build more, so after the failure of the first test, DARPA has only one more shot at a successful flight or the project will be discontinued.

Dolphin battles prostate cancer | TheGazette

Here's Ed Podolak and Gary Dolphin in the radio booth at Kinnick Stadium. Health-wise, it's been a rough couple months for the gentlemen. Podolak suffered several injuries, including two broken legs, after being struck by a car in February. Wednesday, Dolphin announced that he's battling prostate cancer.

University of Iowa radio play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin announced Wednesday that he is battling prostate cancer.

The 60-year-old Dolphin, who?s going into his 15th season as the voice of Iowa football and men?s basketball, said the cancer was caught early and he expects to fulfill his duties in the booth. He was diagnosed in May and started treatment Tuesday.

In a statement, he urged men age 50 and above to be vigilant with their health.

?My doctors are confident they?ve caught the cancer in the early stages and I will attack it aggressively with radiation treatment,? said Dolphin. ?Barring unforeseen circumstances, I expect to fulfill all my responsibilities to the University and Learfield Sports, where football and basketball are concerned.

?In the meantime I would appreciate the prayers and well wishes from Hawkeye fans all over the country. I?d also like to urge ALL males, age 50 and above, to have the simple PSA blood test performed. It could save their life.?

Dolphin has served as host for the weekly coaches show on radio and television, featuring Kirk Ferentz and Fran McCaffery. He also represents the UI Athletics Department at countless benefits, fundraisers and I-Club events throughout the year.

?We?ll be with Dolph every step of the way through his treatment of this disease,? said Chuck Schroeder, general manager of Hawkeye Sports Properties. ?Gary is a huge part of Hawkeye Sports Properties and the Hawkeye Radio Network. We have great confidence that he?ll be ready when we go on the air in a few short weeks.?

Dophin?s news follows the ongoing recovery of his booth partner, Ed Podolak. The Iowa football analyst was hit by a car in Arizona in February. He suffered numerous injuries, including two broken legs. He?s been doing his rehabilitation in Iowa City since early spring.

Podolak also plans a return to the booth for Iowa?s Sept. 3 season opener against Tennessee Tech.

?Its turned out to be a trying year for Eddie and me,? Dolphin said. ?I draw a lot of inspiration from guys like Ed and Norm Parker [who lost his right foot to diabetic complications last fall] given all they?ve been through. I want an attitude just like theirs as I proceed through treatment for my cancer.?

David Arquette Fights To Make Malaria No More On Trip To Senegal

As his 40th birthday approached, David Arquette decided to take a trip to a far-flung, exotic location -- not an abnormal thing to do to mark that special mid-life occasion. The "Scream" series star's sightseeing itinerary, however, was markedly different from most celebratory vacations.

His trip? A five day tour of Senegal, to better educate himself on the scourge of malaria, and become a better advocate in the fight to eradicate the deadly disease.

"I don't obviously need anything for my birthday, but 40 is a big milestone," Arquette told The Huffington Post in a recent interview. "For a child in Africa to reach the age of five is a huge milestone; they become less susceptible to dying of malaria, so that's sort of the idea behind this, to give the gift of life."

Having learned of the relief organization Malaria No More while working with Idol Gives Back to support Feeding America, Arquette said that he was moved to take action when he found out that nearly 2000 Africans a day die of the disease, with a child passing away every 45 seconds.

The statistics, said, were "mind boggling," to the point that he was willing to do a lot more than just lend his name and perhaps a commercial shoot or two to the cause.

"To get involved with a cause, you really have to become aware of it," he said. "You have to go on the ground and see with your own eyes, the people who have been affected by it, their process in how they're combating it, and what the organization represents."

"The level of poverty that these people have to endure on a daily basis is really eye-opening," Arquette remembered. "A lot of the time in America we get complacent, we get comfortable, we have all these material possessions. I have them myself, I'm not Ghandi and renounce everything, but what is just a little to us is so much to them."

Despite the striking scene, Arquette was heartened by progress already made -- cutting down child deaths from once per 30 seconds to once per 45 -- and now understands what is needed to cut out the plague entirely.

In fact, it's rather simple.

"It's just a series of education of setting up nets, using them properly, getting under them by a certain time and making sure there's no standing water around the area," Arquette detailed. "And if somebody does get infected, they know to diagnose it immediately so that they know if it's malaria or just common fever."

That being said, the trip also helped him come to understand the dynamics of the relief efforts, and made clear that it's assistance, not sympathy or imperial leadership, that the African people need.

"The kind of work that they're doing in Senegal, specifically, the place I visited, really sort of opened my eyes to that it's a grassroots effort, that Africans themselves are the ones who are taking care of this, that are doing the necessary job on the ground," he said.

"You see these people, they have such an amazing human spirit. They're so alive, they're just inspirational, the way they live their lives," Arquette continued in his glowing reflection. "There's a tradition in Senegal culture, where every month, a small group of friends and family, put a certain portion of their income away and they put it into a pool and then a different person in that group gets it each month... For people who don't have much to be so kind and generous really was an inspiration."

There was one man, in particular, that he singled out as one of the most inspirational.

"We met a guy named El Hadj, who lost his 11-year old daughter to malaria, and he made it his life's goal that no other parent would have to suffer the same loss that he had," Arquette explained. "So now he's gone around to his village and 66 villages in his surrounding area, and they've reduced the rate of malaria down from 3,500 deaths last year to almost non-existent.. Just to show what they can do on the ground is remarkable."

El Hadj went to the power source, convincing his chief to fine villagers 50 cents if their nets aren't in place by a certain time each night, which speaks to the power of money in eradicating malaria deaths. And while the fines the locals charge are minuscule, Arquette is thinking of grander terms.

Through a Crowdfunder page, the star is working to raise $25,000 for the cause, which will then be matched by Sumitomo Chemical/Olyset. At $10 per net, the impact will be astronomic. You can donate by clicking here.
