My Schunemann Family Adventures: Hawaii, Pele and Time

Our 16 days in Hawaii were very active for each and every one of us. Whether we were preparing busily for the music festival and stealing moments with sea and sand or whether we had the entire day for such pursuits, we all benefited from the time away. Mixed in with the experiences we created together as a new family, we all brought memories with us from visits past. It was not entirely clear what this would be like for each of us and besides conversation between Sven and myself, little was said.

What became so apparent to me is how accurate the old adage of, 'time is a healer.' I would add that it is also helps to bind and allows for growth.

We visited many places, some new and many that we had been to before. I was not sure what the depth of the girl's memories were of their previous trip to Hawaii and found myself paying close attention. I was delighted to observe that their memories were happy, if unfocused by passage of time. True to form, they seemed very happy to add the ones we were creating as a new family to the mix.

After an amazing two weeks, we decided to stop on the way to the airport and pay homage to Pele, whose energy looked after us whilst on the island. We had noticed during our time there that many people had left offerings on the lava rock and felt that it would be good to do the same.

When we stopped, both girls presented the small offerings they had collected earlier. Sven and I spent our time walking around the rocks: together, alone and enjoying every aspect of being there.

We took a quite a few pictures, all inspired by Sven's ideas of what art we could make on the dark lava rock.

He suddenly come up with the idea of taking inspiration from Andy Goldworthy who did some wonderful work with ephemeral art. He asked us to collect handfuls of lava rock and on his queue, throw the rock in the air.

This is the result. Sven took one picture and the result speaks for itself.

Time does seem to heal all. With time, people starting from different places and coming together under varying circumstances can also heal and grow together. I left Hawaii realizing that, three years on, we are in fact a new family.
