Guess what? I?m going to share something with you that very few people outside the domain industry are aware of; the best dot-coms are still here! There are plenty of great dot-com domains left for small businesspeople and individuals that are looking for names that are special to them. Oh, you won?t be getting your hands on any domains that the domainers (domainers are people who buy and sell domain names on speculation) refer to as ?premium names;? most?if not all?of them are taken by the big internationals. Most of you are looking for names that are in some way unique to you, not generic names like ?cars,? ?wood,? or ?credit;? all of which are great examples of premium domain names.
Businessmen and women are looking for domains that say something about their business. For instance a man named Mike that rents or sells boats might be happier with a dot-com called ?MikesBoats? than a generic ?boats.com.? A ladies shoe emporium might go with ?Owlshoes? or ?Qtshoes? or ?Tomasinasshoes.? Again, the generic ?shoes? might be worth a fortune to the collectors or one of the big shoe manufacturers, but as a domain name for a small local shoe shop?not so much.
Why has this knowledge been covered up by the domain industry? Why does it want people to think that all the best dot-com domains are gone? Simple. It?s good business. Tell people that the product is in short supply and the demand will go up. Besides, there are literally hundreds of other domain extensions out there to choose from and we?re hoping you will turn to them if you don?t find your first choice in a com domain.
It?s important to be creative. If you can?t find the dot-com you want in one or two words, add a third. ?Mikesboats,? for example, could be ?BigMikesBoats.? That?s as easy to remember as the shorter domain, just as easy to say, and as hard to misspell. All three criteria, by the way, make for a perfect domain name.
I?ve brought this out into the open because I?m tired of people being told that the best dot-coms are gone. The question is, best for whom? Best for most of us or best for the collectors and big internationals? I?m tired of hearing about people who took their business to the social networks looking for a home because they thought they couldn?t find a suitable address on the Internet. A domain name of your own is still the best way to do business on the web. With the social networks, they, not you, are in control.
