The Psychology of School Violence | eZine Articles Headquarters

How often have we heard in the news about school fights and other forms of school violence? If it is not that serious, of course, the school will just handle the situation themselves discreetly. It is only serious cases like that of a boy gunning down his schoolmates are just some of the things we?ll hear in the news.

In reality, school violence is a serious problem in most countries. It may start as little as a kid bullying a classmate or a lower grade level student but eventually, it can lead to anger issues that result to the use of knives and even guns. Apart from violence between school students, it can aggravate to physical attacks of students to school staff. There are a few countries who have been vocal about their awareness on this issue. These are:

There is actually more to school violence than meets the eye. According to experts and psychologists, it doesn?t start in school. Most of these behaviors are ?learned responses to circumstances as well as situations exhibited in everyday life?. Children are naturally influenced by home life conditions. This means, if one child is in an environment where one of his or her parents is abused (whether physically or verbally), the child takes this as the norm. Studies have also proven that when a child lives in an abusive home, later on, he too will become the abuser. This is because he or she will see violence as the solution to a problem. In their view, the stronger one is the winner in every situation so they emulate the behavior. Also because they would rather be the abuser than the abused.

There was also a survey that shows that parents who practice severe discipline and voicing out of negative attitudes towards their young boys will increase their aggressive behavior in school. This also goes with the use of coercive methods in controlling children (like threatening them with violence for their disobedience). This too can lead to the child?s violent behavior.

These days, it is a normal home setting to find both parents working. Since this is the case, most kids now lack parent supervision. Due to this, the child learns to make his or her decisions. When this happens, the child then views himself as his own boss. Sibling violence can also trigger later violence in school. Think of it this way ? if this child can get away with bullying his or her siblings then what can hinder them from attacking their friends, classmates or schoolmates in school?

When there is lack of discipline, the child tends to become self-absorbed. When parents overindulge their child, he will think that he can do no wrong. He will act and think that he won?t get punished. When he grows up with this lack of empathy for others, he will also be void of moral values for others.

TV also plays a large factor in the violent behavior of children. Violence on TV may seem funny to us but for kids, they end up thinking that it?s okay. They become numb to the horrors of actual violence. As media glamorizes violence, children end up thinking that it?s okay to kill.

Aside from TV, music is also one factor influencing the youth of today. Violent lyrics, cult-like following, videos mocking authority, women as victims of violence and glorifying guns ? these add to the cynicism of troubled children.

As millions of crimes happen every day, the little things we ignore like the bully who pushes little kids around can lead to bigger problems in the future. Every school curriculum should also teach nonviolence. When you educate the youth of today about the effects of violence, you are teaching them how to manage conflict in a rational, non-violent way. It should also be the role of parents and teachers to watch out for sigs of unusual behavior. Through early detection, you can address the issue before it escalates into uncontrollable behavior in the future.

There are ways to prevent school violence and one example would be for schools to start teaching non-violence. There is even a list of schools on Facebook that mention how they plan to work on this behavior through the early detection of the problem.
